Judith Mayton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 27, 2024.
Judith Mayton died peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 25 from complications of Parkinson's Disease.

Judith Ann (Robertson) Mayton of Raleigh, North Carolina, was born on June 22, 1943, in Springfield, Missouri to Rev. Charles and Pearl Robertson. She graduated from George S. Gardiner High School in Laurel, Mississippi, in 1961 and from the University of Southern Mississippi, with a B.S in English in 1965. Judith completed an M.S. degree in Counseling Psychology in 1989 at Northeastern (Oklahoma) State University, Tahlequah, Oklahoma.

Judith was on the Behavioral Sciences faculty at Oral Roberts University for over 25 years. She received awards for her teaching and was well loved and respected by her students. She taught in public schools in both Arkansas and Tennessee. A gifted musician, who played piano, organ and directed choirs, she served on the music staff for three churches.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Raleigh. She treasured her time there, especially being a part of the Gentle Shepherd Choir.

She loved animals and always said she knew all of her dogs would be waiting for her in heaven. We really hope her theology on that is correct.

Judith was a caring, kind and empathetic person who would always take the time to listen to the needs of others. Her husband and daughter were often left waiting in a store somewhere while she patiently listened to a stranger's life story.

Judith is survived by her husband of 57 years, Rev. Dr. Kenneth Mayton, her daughter, Shelley Mayton Barstow (Scott) of Raleigh, her grandchildren, Margaret (Sergeant Noah J. Rosemond, USMC) of Okinawa, Japan and Charlie, of Raleigh.

The family would like to thank the staff at Falls River Court, Pruitt Health, Pruitt Hospice, the staff and church family of Good Shepherd Lutheran, and the many friends and family who cared for and remembered Judith during her illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Rd., Raleigh, NC 27613 or online at the link below. Please specify "In Memory of Judith Mayton."

A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor in Raleigh on Friday, March 15th at 2:00 pm. The service will also be live streamed at the link below.

Judith was a good friend and co-worker. We supported each other as colleagues, shared heartaches and laughter, playfully harassed each other, and prayed together. I miss her a lot.

I knew Judith from being a professor, being familiar with her and her husband, Ken in the seminary at Oral Roberts University. Judith was a teacher of my kids while they attended Oral Roberts. I'll never forget the day that Judith approached me about my daughter, Christa dating Maurice, who would become her future husband. She assured me that he was a fine young man, and not like the typical jocks you find in college. She has proven to be correct as they had enjoyed 11 glorious years of marital bliss and two children. I thank Judith for her insight and helping me to see how good of man Maurice was then and still is.

During the late 1980's and early 1990's, Education and Behavioral Sciences shared the space where the College of Education now occupies. That is when I first met Judith; I was going through a difficult time in 1989, and during lunch hour when nobody else was in my office, she quietly came up to me and said that she was praying for me. In 2010, I was hired to be the assistant to her husband, Dr. Kenneth Mayton. She had a quiet demeanor, but exuded strength and compassion, and had a very dry sense of humor--which I loved! I will always remember her as a classy woman who could make anyone comfortable with her compassionate listening ear; anyone who spoke with Judith knew that he or she had her undivided attention. I have a feeling that she is conducting the heavenly choir of angels, and that brings a smile to my face. May her memory be a blessing.

I was a student at Oral Roberts University where I first met Mrs. Judith Mayton. I immediately felt a kindred spirit with her because she as feisty and dignified as my own mother I have many fond memories of sharing time house sitting and watching Claire Bear and Pumpkin. I am grateful for her impact on my life. No matter how old I get, I always look up to her. May she rest in the eternal peace of God Almighty. ~Angela Abraham ~

I´ve been Judith´s hairdresser for the past 4 years, she was one of my first new clients after coming back post pandemic and what a wonderful breath of fresh air she was! Beautiful, intelligent and incredibly insightful, also quite adventurous with new hairstyles! We had so much fun together and I felt like I was getting therapy while I was visiting with her, such an incredible human being! Her husband Ken would often join us in the salon as well and I enjoyed hearing their life stories! What an impactful and amazing life this precious lady lived! I will never forget her!
