Juel Sweatte Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 26 to Aug. 28, 2009.
Juel Sweatte of Norman, Oklahoma died Sunday August 23, 2009 at the age of 79. Mr. Sweatte was born June 15, 1930 in Miami, Florida, to Mr. Leo Sweatte and Mrs. Grace Gooding. He was raised aboard the USS Amphitrite, a hotel ship which traveled along the Eastern seaboard. Juel settled in Georgetown, SC where he graduated high school and played football earning him a full scholarship to the University of Oklahoma to play football under coach Bud Wilkerson. While attending the University of Oklahoma, Juel was awarded the title of an All American Back, and won the Big 7 Championship in the 60 and 100 yard dash in both 1953-54. Juel served for the Navy in the Korean War. Upon returning to Oklahoma, Juel was drafted to play football for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955. He returned to Oklahoma to be joined with his wife Elaine, and in 1957 built a restaurant named Glenn's Drive In, which later was operated for 28 years as a Sonic. Today this well known landmark on Lindsey Street is recognized as Classic 50's Drive-In and is still serving the community.Till his death, Juel remained very active in his community. He was a life long member of the "O Club", OU's official letterman's club. His restaurant donated a great deal of time and efforts to the University; he raised funds and created billboards for the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History. Classic 50's continues to donate food and cups to numerous University affairs today, not to mention creating wonderful memories for today's youth, and people from the past growing up and cruising to the Drive-In.Mr. Sweatte is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Elaine Sweatte; his three children; Kelly Sweatte, Tim Sweatte, and Leslie Seal; and his six grandchildren, Jeri Sieber, T.J. We offer our deepest sympathy. When tragedy strikes and takes the life of our loved ones, many cry out with great sorrow. Your tears are not unnoticed by the Creator of Life. Never was it his purpose for our human lives to be taken away. Although your deep pain will not easily disappear, prayer to God will bring comfort to you as you grieve. The Bible assures us God "is healing the broken hearted ones, and is binding up their painful spot." Psalm 147:3

Uncle Juel and Aunt Elaine would stop by the house over the years and visit with us when I was growing up. My dad (Leo)always had a few stories that would make Uncle Juel and Aunt Elaine laugh. However Uncle Juel usually had a good one up his sleeve about dad.
I had the good fortune of an extended stay when I was a very young adult. The wisdom, advice and example that I received are with me to this day.
It was a gift to visit with Uncle Juel, Aunt Elaine and my cousin Kelly in '07 at my mom and dad's anniversary party. The photo is from the party.
I know that Uncle Juel would want everyone to remember the good times you shared with him. No matter how difficult the situation, he would always find a smile with a laugh soon to follow.
Love and prayers go out to Aunt Elaine, Kelly, Tim, Leslie and the family.

i used to sit with him everyday on the second pew at first baptost church, just me and him usually; I always looked forward to talking with him and just giving him a hug. He always had stories to tell me of times passed or advice to give me about college and my continued walk with God. . . though we were 61 years apart I considered him a dear friend who I will truely miss; he could always brighten my day with just a smile.

Juel will be dearly missed by his family from the University of Oklahoma Athletics Department...Not only was he dedicated in the trenches and on the football field, he remained dedicated to always lending a helping hand to anything that was asked of him. The Varsity O Association has lost a great friend and we will never forget him. Our prayers go out to his family...God bless.

On this August 26, 2009, I went to Google to see if I could find anything in it on Juel for memories sake, since he was such a good friend at OU. It is strange that I immediately found his obituary. I knew him through the Wesley Foundation. When he had a football injury in 1953 Bud Wilkinson had him go to the track team in the spring. I remember watching him win just about every event that spring and often led the track team in points. I went into the Navy Aug. 24, 54, and so did not see him again until we had a "50s reunion at Wesley Foundation. I called him from our motel and he joined us at the WF center and we all really enjoyed getting to be with him and remember all the great times together.
I have thought of him often and was so glad he was able to keep so active in the "O" Club. He loved OU football and athletics. You and your family will be in my prayers and thoughts in the days ahead.

My heart flet sorrow and smypathy goes to the family in this time of grief. Juel was a very dear friend and we spend lots of time in the "O" Club Lounge talking about the past. May The Good Lord be with his family and give them strength. Clifford "P.B." Stone. MBB54
