Julian Nelms, Sr. Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2025.
Julian Boyd Nelms, Sr., 71, of Fremont, passed away to his Heavenly reward on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family. Julian was born in Nash County to the late Clemon and Ella Ruth Nelms on October 15, 1953. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Larry Clemon Nelms. Julian was a man whose dedication to family, faith, and service to his community left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Julian served as a Code Enforcement Officer for Wayne County, where he worked tirelessly to maintain the safety and well-being of his fellow citizens. His commitment to his work and to the betterment of Wayne County extended beyond his role, as he also served on the Wayne County Livestock Board and the Farm Bureau Board, advocating for the agricultural community and the values he held dear. A proud farmer, Julian spent many years in Fremont, NC, cultivating the land he loved and fostering connections with his neighbors and fellow farmers.

Julian's passion for his community was also evident in his leadership role as the past president of the Fremont Jaycees. Whether through his work with the Livestock Board or his time serving on local boards, he approached every task with dedication and integrity.

Julian had a deep passion for NASCAR, finding joy in the thrill of the race. He also cherished the time he spent exploring and restoring both classic and antique tractors. This lifelong appreciation for tractors not only fueled his curiosity and craftsmanship but also led him to forge lasting friendships with fellow enthusiasts across the country.

A devout member of The First Church of Goldsboro, Julian's faith was central to everything he did. His generous spirit and commitment to ministry were felt across the congregation. He volunteered countless hours, serving on the church board, the Blanket Ministry Board, and the Men's Ministry Board, sharing his time, energy, and resources with those in need. His kindness extended beyond the church walls-he was well-known as the "Church Cook," selflessly preparing meals for special events and ensuring that no one went hungry.

Julian's selflessness and unwavering faith touched many lives, and his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a man of integrity, humor, and generosity, whose contributions to his community and church will never be forgotten. His legacy of service, compassion, and love for others will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate to cross his path.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 9, 2025 from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. at The First Church followed by a service to celebrate Julian's life at 3:00 p.m. in the sanctuary with Pastor Bill Rose officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Fremont, NC.

Julian is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gwynne Whitley Nelms; children, Julian Boyd Nelms, Jr., Ashley Benton Nelms Smith and husband, Joshua Adam Smith, and Lee Whitley Nelms; grandchildren, Aubrey Claire Smith and Avery Gray Smith; brother, Henry Allen Nelms; sister, Ella Andre Foster; and many nieces, nephews and extended family that he loved very much.

Julian's life was a testament to the power of service, love, and faith. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on through the lives he touched.
