I was lab tech in Keith Taylor's lab in Gastroenterology at Stanford Medical Center. June was doing her fellowship in gastroenterology and supervised me as we studied antibodies to gastric parietal cells in serum and gastric juice of patients with pernicious anemia. I was graciously included as an author in the articles publidhed in Lancet. Later on when the man in my life was driving a Muni bus, he reported that many of his fellow drivers had high blood pressure. I asked June why she thought this was happening. She set about investigating--with far-reaching effect.

June was a mentor, a colleague and a friend, and always an inspiration. Her research on the health impact of professional driving (mainly bus driving) was pioneering. Her work helped to show that hypertension was an occupational disease, and a major problem facing bus drivers. And she was a tireless advocate on behalf of bus drivers and worked closely with TWU Local 250A in San Francisco to help improve the working conditions of drivers. She was beloved by members of the Local and many other transport workers around the world. And, she inspired many of us to pursue participatory action research and educated many of us on the value of PAR.

June was a genuine pioneer. Her heart, mind and soul were oozing with social justice and her professional training allowed her to make a difference in millions of lives. She left a lasting legacy of good will for all humans to enjoy.
