June Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 20 to Aug. 23, 2008.
MARTIN _ June (nee McFarlane) June 2, 1932 - August 18, 2008 With deep sorrow we announce that June Martin passed away unexpectedly on August 18 at the age of 76. June was a devoted and much loved wife, mother and grandmother. June's loving husband Jack of fifty-three years passed away in February of this year. June is survived by her daughter Leslie Weekes and her husband Dave, her son Mike and his wife Danielle Macdonald and her three grandsons, Mike, Matt and Steve Weekes. June and Jack lost their eldest son Dave at the age of thirty-seven. June is also survived by her sisters and her brothers-in-law, Joan and John Thomson and Jane and Gary Manchester and their children and grandchildren. She loved her grandsons dearly and delighted in regaling her friends with stories of their exploits. June was born in Calgary and lived her entire life there. She was the daughter of Julia and Gordon McFarlane and had two sisters, Joan and Jane. June met Jack when he was attending University of Alberta (however Jack was sure he actually first saw June when he was delivering newspapers to the McFarlane family when they were vacationing in Sylvan Lake as children). June accompanied Jack, with baby Dave in tow, when he went to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois to obtain his Ph.D. in Geology. June supported Jack throughout his career, including a chilly trip by small airplane to the Northwest Territories. June and Jack loved to travel together, including numerous golf holidays from Scotland to California. They also greatly enjoyed their vacation homes in Fairmont Hot Springs, BC and, later, Green Valley, Arizona. June loved to curl, golf and play bridge with friends. June dearly loved (and was loved by) her many, many longtime friends and her family. She always had a story in mind that she had looked forward to telling when you first arrived. June was always cheerful and quick to share her beautiful smile with those around her. June always had great concern for others, checking in with friends and the first to offer a hand when one was needed. In his later years, Jack battled emphysema. June was always at his side and his source of strength, taking it all in stride. As with everything, they were in it together. Funeral Services will be held at Grace Presbyterian Church at 1009 - 15 Avenue S.W. today, August 23, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of June Martin to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (Telephone 403-255-7100, 204, 1608 - 17 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2T 0E3). In living memory of June Martin, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: 403-243-8200.

We are thinking of you all today as you are saying goodbye to June. Wish we could be there to offer our respect and support. Your description of June was wonderful. It captured her spirit and her quest for life but forgot to mention her fabulous shortbread cookies.
We will be home late next week and will then offer support in person.
Love to you all,

Mike, Danielle, Les & Dave,
We are deeply saddened by the loss of June. She was a great lady and we will cherish many fond memories. We always enjoyed spending time with June. No family should have to lose both their parents 6 months apart, but she will now be with her life time love, Jack. Our prayers are with you during this very difficult time.
Mike & Danielle, we love you and sorry we cannot leave St. John's to be with you. Take care of each other.
