In Loving Memory of Justin Allan Smith

March 3, 1980 - September 21, 2023

A dedicated soldier, loving father, and survivor.

Justin Allan Smith (Smitty), a man of unwavering strength and resilience, touched the lives of many with his enduring spirit, charming smile, and infectious laugh. Born in 1980 he faced a challenging childhood, but his determination led him to become a proud soldier in the army. His service to his country was a testament to his bravery and commitment. Over 18 years he served three tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Serving in a light infantry company, he patrolled hot zones, accompanied VIPs to and from meetings and high-profile areas. His company escorted ambassadors from several countries, providing security and arresting hostile actors. His fellow soldiers remember him as a brave soldier who was fearless in duty, who had a sense of happiness when times were tough. He was a bright light in a dark place. After his time in the Army, Justin continued to use his talents to serve fellow veterans working at the VA is Des Moines, IA.

Beyond his uniform, Justin was a father, and his love for his Daughter, Lanaya, was boundless. He cherished every moment with her. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. Justin was the one you could count on to always be there no matter what, even if that means shaving your bangs because you think they are too thick as he did for his sister Ashley when they were children.

Justin was an amazing cook and a master on the grill. He loved the challenge of finding new recipes and making them his own. He enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. Creating memorable meals was one of the ways he showed his love for those he cared about. He also had a passion for saltwater fish tanks as he found working on the tank as well as the fish themselves very relaxing. Other ways he liked to pass time were working in his garden and spending time fishing. With all of his hobbies he was always looking for new or better ways to do it and enjoyed the challenge in finding those ways as much as the activity itself.

While his struggles were known to few, we remember Justin not for the battles he fought within, but for the battles he conquered in service, fatherhood, and friendship. In the midst of his own pain, he gave his all for his family.

Justin was preceded in death by his first wife, Carrie Smith; Stepfather, Greg Stribley; Grandparents Donald & Glanaya Smith and his Great Aunt Chickie.

He is survived by his daughter Lanaya Smith; Mother, Barb Stribley; Father, Brian (Coreen) Smith; Sisters, Jen (Brad) Schoer and Ashley Smith; Half-brother, Austin Smith; Stepbrother JD Smith; Uncles, Tony (Roshanda) Smith and Kelly (Tricia) Smith who were wonderful father figures to Justin; Cousins Marc Ulanowski, who was more of a big brother, and Jesse Bravo, who was like a sister; He is survived by many more family and friends who he meant more to than he could ever know.

Though his journey has come to an end, we honor Justin's memory and celebrate the strength he showed throughout his life. Let us remember the love he had for Lanaya, his family, his dearest friends and the sacrifices he made to protect our nation.

Justin Allan Smith's story is a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there is strength, and even in the deepest pain, there is love. May he find the peace in death that eluded him in life, and may his memory forever inspire us to be kinder, more compassionate, and understanding to those who bear burdens we may not see.

Thank you for always having our six - Hooah!
