Karen Ferguson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 18, 2024.
Vero Beach - Karen Louise Ferguson, M.D. left us peacefully on July 12, 2024. Adored by everyone who had the fortune of being her friend, relative, peer or patient, she was a well respected and caring obstetrician and gynecologist, a loving wife and sister, the cool aunt and the fun friend who was game for anything.

A consummate professional, Dr. Ferguson was her peers' first choice when they needed a consultation for a difficult case, a second surgeon or a doctor themselves. With patients, she was supportive, warm and caring, but most importantly, successful in treating them. With patients and peers, she developed relationships that spanned decades.

Outside of her professional life, Karen was fun-loving and mischievous with an infectious smile. She traveled the world with her friends and hosted family holidays filled with fun and laughter. Karen had the enviable skill of bringing joy to a room with her mere presence.

Born September 3, 1949, she graduated high school in Illinois before studying physical therapy as an undergrad at Washington University at St. Louis. She continued her education at Missouri University for medical school graduating in 1977. Karen then completed her internship in internal medicine and subsequently her residency in 1983 in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Florida where she also became a member of the faculty. She had private practices in Indian River and Brevard counties, seeing patients for more than 30 years.

Karen leaves her brother, David Ferguson and his wife, Laurel, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, her nieces Marcie Campbell of Somerville, Massachusetts and Jane Ferguson of Danville, California and nephew Ryan Ferguson of Melrose, Massachusetts and their families. She is predeceased by her husband, Edward S. Bittar, M.D. and her eldest brother, Allan R. Ferguson of Meriden, New Hampshire.

Services to honor Karen are being planned and will be held at a later date. If you wish to honor Karen's legacy, please consider a donation to the National Audubon Society.

I recently learned that my gyn (retired) passed away several months ago and I'm having a very hard time processing her loss. Fergie (Dr. Karen Ferguson) was my doctor for over 20 years: but she was more than that. She was a very special person and a very good friend. She guided me through infertility treatments, multiple surgeries and miscarriages, including several ectopic (which eventually took my tube when it exploded on the operating table). Another time, I bled into my abdominal cavity which forced an emergency surgery and Fergie was prepped and ready when they rolled me into the OR. Thank God I had my Fergie to take care of me and thank God it was in a time where doctors and patients were able to make life-saving decisions so I didn't bleed out on my kitchen floor. Fergie, I love you and miss you so much. I hope we in Florida make you proud this election. You stood up for women for a long time, now it's our turn. (written prior to 11/6/24)

My deepest sympathy to Karen's family & friends. I was Karen's Med School classmate & roommate. Five us connected the summer prior to our first year through a class list mailed from the school. Five women, all strangers, all low on funds. We rented a tiny house. One day Karen dragged in a stack of lumber, a pile of fabric, and a staple gun, and announced, "We're going to build a couch!" Five roommates have never had so much fun as we did. She was always there for us, and for everyone she encountered. Karen, you are missed terribly.

So sorry to hear of Karen's passing. I had the pleasure of working with her, when her nurse Judy was off at our OB/GYN office at Par Place. All her patients loved her, and would wait as long as it took to see her for their visit that day.... She added to Dr.OLIVEIRA and Dr.GRIFFITH a wonderful partner, cherished friend, filled with love, fun and a heart of compassion....R.I.P. Dr.Karen

My deepest condolences to Karen´s family and friends (of who I am one). I´ve known Karen since moving to Melbourne some 40 years ago. Our husbands worked together, she delivered my children, and took care of my daughter´s gyn needs many years later. I had the privilege of being her dentist. She graced our lives with her love, humor and excellence in medicine. She taught us to be better people and practitioners. I was a tad bit envious of all those bicycle trips she took. I´m sorry I never took her up on her offer to ride! See you in heaven, sweet Karen....
