Karen J. Pfuetze Graziano, 77, of Drums passed away peacefully at her home on April 9.
Well loved by her parents, Dr. Paul E. Pfuetze and Louise Gibson Pfuetze, she spent her childhood in Georgia. She graduated from Arlington High School, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., after her family moved there, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Parson's College in 1966. She later went on to earn a master's degree from SUNY New Paltz.
Karen is survived by her loving husband, Joseph A. Graziano, of 30 years; brother, Christopher Calder; and cousin, Mary Chandler. She was a proud mother to one son, Jeffrey Marsilio (wife, Kristen), Calabasas, Calif.; and her two grandsons, Colt and Ryder.
Karen was a dedicated teacher, having impacted the lives of children across the country. She taught in California, Maryland and Pennsylvania. While living in Morocco, Africa, she provided instruction to students who were working to obtain their GED. She passed her love of reading and education on to her son and others that she worked with in her community.
Karen was a traveler; she never missed a chance to spend time at the beach, especially if she could sleep in before relaxing in the sun. Her favorite places included Ocean City, Md., and New Bern, N.C. She was also a friend to all things furry, having loved and cared for many pets over her lifetime. Later in life, she preferred being a homebody, hosting visits with friends and family who will all remember her passion for dining room table social discussions and reminiscing. She was supportive, kind and generous in every interaction she had with others.
Karen gave back to her community through service in several areas that were important to her and paid tribute to her upbringing. Having grown up in the Quaker Meeting House, she remained engaged as an adult and later was involved in activities of the Catholic church with her husband, Joseph. She was an active member of the American Association of University Women, as well as several local book clubs.
A celebration of life is being planned for 1 p.m. May 29 at Sand Springs Country Club, Drums.
Contributions in memory of Karen may be made to SPCA of Luzerne County.
Arrangements are under the direction of Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc., Hazleton.
