Dr. Ralph D. Gray Jr. of Morristown N.J. passed away at Chatham Hills Sub-Acute Care center on Friday August, 26th at the age of 78 following a short illness. Ralph was born in Akron, Ohio in 1938. He graduated valedictorian of his high-school class of 1956 and earned a National Merit Scholarship. Following his undergraduate studies at Case Western Reserve University, Ralph graduated from the University of Delaware with a doctoral degree in Thermodynamics. Ralph worked at Exxon Research and Development in Florham Park N.J. from 1964 to 2001 where he earned several patents, including one for a type of synthetic oil. He was an adjunct professor at Columbia University, City College, Manhattan College, NJIT, and Stevens University until retiring in 2008. Ralph was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Morristown for nearly 40 years where he served as an elder, deacon, and member of the radio crew. Ralph coached for 10 years in the Morris United Soccer Club. He enjoyed golfing, annual vacations to Maine, family dinners with his wife and sons and was a cycling and car enthusiast. He was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Edith, his brother Richard, and sister, Patricia all of Holmes County, Ohio. Ralph is survived by his loving wife Nancy of 48 years, and sons Matthew and Andrew as well as his sister, Marilyn Lydic, and sister-in-law Pamela Clackworthy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Lustgarten Foundation.
