KARIN VON AROLDINGEN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2018.
VON AROLDINGEN--Karin.

The New York City Ballet family mourns the passing of Karin von Aroldingen, the German-born ballerina known for the power and vitality of her dancing, and the knowledge, craft and care with which she passed on the legacy of George Balanchine. Invited by Balanchine to join NYCB in 1962, Karin created leading roles in such landmark Balanchine ballets as "Who Cares?", "Vienna Waltzes", "Stravinsky Violin Concerto" and "Union Jack", among numerous others. After retiring from the stage in 1984, Karin spent many years staging Balanchine's ballets for companies around the world, rejoining NYCB as a Ballet Master in 2004. A cherished friend and colleague to generations of artists, she will be greatly missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her daughter Margo Arjang and her entire family.

Karin was always a special lady. I was originally taught Serenade by Pat Neary but Karin staged it in Philadelphia. It was so wonderful to retouch it with her.Rest in peace. I'm sure Mr. B is creating more ballets on you.

My dear friend Karin:
We were young artists together at the Art Students League. Living in the Village near each other as young women. You were such a creative muse for me and we were such close friends. I have never forgotten that time and I have always been so proud of knowing you and introducing you to Morty. I will always remember.
All my best love to Margo and the family.
Love, Sandy

Karin staged Serenade for Louisville Ballet in 1985. As a new professional ballet dancer, I was so in awe of her powerful presence, strength and beauty. As a young dancer in the 70s, I watched her dance, and there was no one like her. I honor and pay great tribute to her...more than words can say. Love to her family.

My condolences to her family. A wonderful dancer, artist with great generosity toward her fans!

Many cherished memories. Truly a great artist.

I love you, Karin. Godspeed.

This photo was of us together in Vienna. Karin von Aroldingen was my favorite Dewdrop Fairy in the Nutcracker when I was Marie. There was no one like her. I always was telling her that. I loved working with her later when I was grown up. She was a beautiful spirit and fantastic ballerina.
With my deepest condolences,
Katherine Healy Burrows

Karin was so warm and friendly whenever I met her She
was so generous in sharing her profound knowledge of Balanchine and his ballets. I will never forget her in so
many of the Balanchine ballets. She was a great dancer and a very special person. What a loss.

I first seriously discovered ballet in the 1980s. Ms. von Aroldingen was my most inspirational icon: elegant, passionate, perfect aristocratic technique. What a great loss this is: another keeper of the Balanchine legacy is gone.

A wonderful artist, an elegant women and an inspiration. The moment she entered the stage in Vienna Waltzes you would experience the perfume of old Vienna. Aristocratic, gorgeous, poised...magic. Was lucky enough to know her briefly.

There are roles that have never been the same since she retired from the stage...Stairway to Paradise in Who Cares and the virtuosic solo variation in Union Jack. She seemed huge and powerful when she danced these roles. I finally had the opportunity to meet her in person and was surprised by how small she was. What a singular talent. I feel lucky that I got to see her perform s many times.
