Karl Werner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 7, 2025.
Major Karl Nils Werner, 79, passed away on April 28, 2025, in Framingham, Massachusetts. A dedicated military officer, accomplished engineer, and devoted family member, Karl lived a life marked by service, intellect, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Born on July 7, 1945, in Malden, Massachusetts, Karl was raised with strong values and a commitment to excellence that would guide him throughout his life. He graduated from Arlington High School in 1963 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1968. He continued his studies at Northeastern, completing a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering in 1970. In recognition of his academic achievements and professional promise, he became a member of the Omega Chi Epsilon fraternity in 1969.

Karl's thirst for knowledge never waned. He earned an MBA from Suffolk University in 1987 and later completed the project management certification program at Penn State University in 2001. His educational pursuits reflected his belief in lifelong learning and his dedication to professional growth.

Over the course of his career, Karl made significant contributions to several prominent organizations including Arthur D. Little, Inc., Oxychem (formerly Hooker Chemical), Gillette, and The Whitman Companies. His work as a chemical engineer was marked by precision and innovation-qualities that also defined his approach to community involvement.

Karl proudly served his country both as a full-time member of the U.S. Army and later as part of the Army National Guard for over two decades. He retired with the rank of Major-a title he carried with honor and pride.

Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Karl found joy and peace near the water. His home in Ipswich was his sanctuary-a place where he could indulge his love for sailing, motorboating, waterskiing, and skiing. Whether navigating open waters or carving through snow-covered slopes, Karl embraced adventure with enthusiasm.

He also used his engineering expertise to benefit others. As a member of the Environmental Resource Committee in Lawrence Township, New Jersey, he worked to improve local environmental practices and was recognized with an award for his contributions-an acknowledgment of both his technical skill and civic spirit.

For 26 years, Karl was married to Susanne Center. He was predeceased by his parents, Nils and Lilian Werner; his oldest sister Jane Goodman and her husband Willis Goodman; and most recently by his sister Cynthia Reardon.

Karl leaves behind a loving extended family who will cherish his memory: nieces and nephews Karen Reardon; Brian Reardon; Jeffrey Reardon; Scott Goodman; Allison Goodman; Lisa Osborn (and her husband Bill), with whom he most recently lived; as well as Fenton cousins Stephen, David, and Thomas. He is also remembered fondly by many members of the Werner family still residing in Sweden, including cousin Olof Werner.

A graveside service honoring Major Karl Nils Werner will be held on Saturday June 7, from 12noon at Mount Pleasant Cemetery located at 70 Medford Street in Arlington, Massachusetts.

May Karl's legacy of service, intellect, and love for nature continue to inspire all who knew him.

Rest in peace, Karl. I will always remember the fond memories we shared together in Ipswich. You and Suzanne were the perfect host and hostess to me and my husband, Bill (Boots), and my two children - Kirk and Kristina. Our times sailing, anchoring at sand bars to swim, and barbecuing at your home will be forever etched in my memory. You were so good to my kids, and we adults had so much fun, too. You'll always be "Captain" Karl to us.

In Memory Of Captain Karl

When my sailing days are over,
And I sail the sea no more,
I shall build myself a refuge
By the ocean's murmuring shore.
As I watch the foaming breakers
When the tide comes rushing in.
I will contemplate my lifetime
With its virtues and its sins.
Where the azure of the heavens
Meets the undulating blue,
Where the sweeping, soaring seagull
Flies its endless quest for food.
It is there I would rest,
When my work on earth is done,
At the endless blue horizon
"Neath the crimson, setting sun.
(Sailor's Rest by D.R. Block)

Thanks for so many wonderful memories. May you have clear sailing ahead!!!
