Katherine "Kitty" Anne Black (nee Seiler)

April 16, 1936 - August 25, 2017

Cary

Compassionate Educator, Servant Leader, Beloved by Church Family

Kitty Black went to meet her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ while at her home in Cary, North Carolina. Her husband of more than 57 years, Ken Black, was by her side. Thousands of people have been taught or helped by Kitty during her life of service. She taught kindergarten for nearly 45 years, influenced by mentors including renowned educator Marva Collins. Retired from Winchester Public Schools, she taught the longest at Virginia Avenue Elementary School.

A graduate of Friends School Baltimore like her mother and five siblings and subsequently Bucknell University, she completed her studies with a Masters degree in Education from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia.

At churches and in the communities of Stephens City and Winchester, Virginia and Cary, North Carolina, she loved generously by teaching Sunday School, and giving out homemade bread, stuffed animals and printed copies of the poem, "A Prayer for You." As a women's leader in the Gideons International Auxiliary since the 1970's, she participated at the national, regional and local levels. It was her joy to hand out scriptures in prisons, nursing schools and to people she met.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth M. Black, of Cary, North Carolina, and children Leslie Black, Laura Reak (Andy) and Rob Wilson-Black (Juli), and grandchildren Kate and Nate Reak and Hannah, Claire and Owen Wilson-Black. She is also survived by her sisters Jane Britton, Susie Haw and brother Richard Seiler. She was predeceased by her brothers William A. Seiler III and Robert Seiler.

As her sister Susie said, Kitsy lived to love.

Celebration Services will be held at Colonial Baptist Church in Cary, NC, on Saturday, September 23rd at 2PM and at First Baptist Church of Middletown, VA, on Saturday, September 30th at 3:00 PM.

Notes of condolence may be sent to: [email protected]

Dear Ken,Leslie,Laura,and Robert,
Your Mom meant so much to me and our family as I was growing up. Bible study, babysitting, working on her wood floors at your home, making chocolate chip cookies-she invited me to work with her on so many things and I enjoyed all of it!She was a real gem and we knew it. May she rest in her heavenly home now. God bless all of you.

Every time I exercised with Kitty at Fitness Connection, for less than a year, she was the dearest, most caring, happiest lady of all who came. As I learn more about her from the entries here, I appreciate her giving life and strong faith and have a much deeper love for her and Ken.

To Mrs. Black's family, she taught my son in kindergarten about 24 yrs ago {he is now 30 1/2 yrs}. We enjoyed having her as his teacher. She came to our home before school started, because she wanted to meet the parents of each of her children that were going to be in her class. Prayers for loss and find comfort that in Heaven, you will meet her again one day.

Kitty, Was one of the nicest people I've had the pleasure to know. She was a wonderful friend of my mother's Helen B. Mallory and Kitty is now with our lord and savior. Prayers and Blessings to her family.

My thoughts are with the family during this difficult time. I hope that the promise in 1 Thessalonians 4:14 can bring comfort. Knowing that there is a hope for our love ones lost in death can be reassuring

Ms. Kitty and Mr. Ken were wonderful classmates in Greenhouse at Colonial. We are really going to miss Ms. Kitty's warmth and kindness. She loved Christ, people, and our little baby dearly. Sending hugs, love, and prayers to Mr. Ken and family.

Kitty was a precious soul who worked in the Gideon Ministry to share God's Word with others. She and her husband Ken have helped many to come to know the Lord and to have a closer walk with him. She was such a delightful spirit that she warmed up any room she entered. We will miss her here on earth but know she is pain free in her heavenly body! Our prayers are with all the family.

Kitty loved Jesus and loved others passionately and selflessly. We will miss our Grandma Kitty. It is our loss but it is Christ's glory that she has gone home to. We pray that others will come to repent and believe the Gospel through the people Kitty and Ken have served and encouraged while she was here in Christ's service, and we pray for comfort for her family. 1 Thess 4:13-18
