Katherine Hellner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 13 to Dec. 14, 2020.
Hellner, Katherine Katherine Ann (Mertz) Hellner passed away peacefully and joined her Lord on December 11, 2020. Katie was born June 15, 1971, to Donald and Judith (Snelling) Mertz in Saginaw, Michigan. She graduated from Frankenmuth High School in 1989 and obtained a bachelor's degree in Marketing from Northwood University in 1993. After marriage, Katie and her family lived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and later in Palm Harbor, Florida, where she worked as a Doula. Katie and her family eventually moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Katie had a passion for babies and stray animals. She was a woman with a kind heart who loved people of all walks of life and backgrounds. She will be remembered for her sense of humor and her deep love for her children. Like many, Katie's big heart was not immune to the effects of mental health issues and substance abuse that impact millions of Americans every year. Katie was preceded in death by her beloved father, Donald J. Mertz. She is survived by three children; Alexis, Natalie, and Harrison Hellner; her mother, Judith Mertz; siblings, Susan (James) Boerger, Martha (Robert) Maccani, and James (Andrea) Mertz; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, two aunts, and many dear friends. Due to COVID restrictions, a celebration of Katie's life will be held in the summer of 2021 in Tawas, Michigan. Donations may be made in her name to any mental health care, substance abuse, or animal care organization of your choice. Arrangements will be handled by McEven Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.

I am very sadden by this news. May Katie find peace now and always remain in your hearts. I will always remember her as the sweet loveable little Katie when I would visit her sister Sue when we were friends in high school. To the entire family, god please and keep her memories close to your heart forever.

I didn't know Katie very well in high school, but we became good friends over the past few years. I will miss her greatly, as many others will.

My heart is breaking upon hearing this tragic news. We worked together in her family’s dental practice many years ago and became friends. Such a sweet, caring, funny lady. I was so honored to have known her. Thoughts and prayers to all of you in this sad time.

I just want to say to you all how sorry I am to hear of Katie’s passing. I will
Always treasure our years together at Northwood as AXO sisters. Katie always had the biggest heart and certainly wore it on her sleeve. Since graduation each time we would catch up, she couldn’t wait to tell me how proud she was of each of her beautiful children. She was the proudest mama and I am sure she will always be their angel looking down. May God bring you all peace as he has wrapped his loving arms around her. Prayers to you all during this difficult time.

Katie helped deliver our son almost 13 years ago. She loved her children immensely. We used to chat about jogging and outdoor activities. Over the years we've kept in touch a bit. She will be missed immensely. Our family sends our deepest condolences
