Katherine is also survived by one sister, Ann McLean Parlier and two nephews Richard and David Parlier, all of Atlanta, GA. She was predeceased by her parents Harry David McLean and Estelle Rose McLean and her brother, Harry David McLean, Jr. Katherine was born in Goldsboro, NC and spent most of her childhood in Raleigh, NC where she graduated from Hugh Morson High School in 1936. While there she was elected Head Varsity Cheerleader, Most Popular in her senior class, and President of the Drama Club. Upon graduation she began working for the Western Union. Later employment included twenty-three years with the U.S. Forest Service in New Bern, Research Triangle Park, and Washington, DC. Upon retiring from the federal government she worked as an executive secretary, a legal secretary, and a medical transcriptionist. Kay, as she was known throughout her adult life, had a plethora of interests that included her love of all of nature, sailing, working the NY Times Acrostic, high heel shoes, reading, and having fun with a wide group of friends. She was left-handed and very proud of this fact. In her high school annual, the toast by her senior picture reads, “Here’s to the girl with a heart and a smile, that makes the bubble of life worth while. So true. Kay was a devoted mother, civic leader, and active churchwoman. She was President of the PTA at Brinson Memorial School for many years, a Girl Scout and Cub Scout Leader for more than a decade, and President of New Bern’s Little Theatre. She taught Sunday School at Christ Episcopal Church and served as the advisor for the EYC for many years. Mrs. Turner touched the lives of many children and young people. She was much loved by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ Episcopal Church Memorial Fund, the Girl Scouts of America or Hospice of New Bern.
