Kathleen Doyle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2024.
Kathleen Doyle passed away on August 14, 2024 in Tampa, FL. She was accompanied by her sister Virginia and many friends who came to visit and laugh with her during her final few days.

Katheleen was born on October 21, 1950, to Jack and Mary Doyle in Boston, MA. Katheleen was the younger sister to Virginia and Paul Doyle and relished being the baby of the family. She was known for her "wicked" and joyful sense of humor and how she cared for so many friends and work colleagues over her 73 years.

After growing up in Roslindale, MA - she ventured out to work for the Red Cross in Washington DC. After many years in the Alexandria area - including the year Elvis died! - she moved to Virginia Beach with the Red Cross. While there she also worked at the famous "Sir Richards" restaurant on weekends, enabling her to trade in her Ford and get a new Subaru - which meant she had to give up her 8-track tape collection! Just this past week she was still laughing about that big transition.

After a few years at Virginia Beach, she moved back to Boston to be near family and worked for MetLife. She loved being back in Boston and settled into a lovely apartment in Southie just a block from the L Street Bathhouse. As she loved to tell her friends- "I lived in Southie before it was hip to live in Southie!" During those years, she generously hosted her nephew Michael or her niece Mary Beth on her couch whenever they needed a break from college life in New Hampshire. One time she even surprised Michael with tickets to see Huey Lewis & the News when they were the hottest ticket in town - and her surprise and delight was only upstaged by her nephew bringing her a beer from the concession stand despite him being just 19 years old. She cherished her many friends at MetLife and was especially grateful to Amby & Marilyn Redman for their decades-long friendship.

After a brief year in California with her brother Paul, she relocated to Tampa, FL to rejoin MetLife and enjoyed many more years of mentoring and building friendships at work. Upon retiring from MetLife, she settled into a job at Publix - where she delighted in seeing her regular customers and "loved up all the kids" that she so enjoyed working with at the store.

Kathleen always loved animals, and she had several cats over the years. Whether it was Clancy in California or Sean & Nora in Florida, she always appreciated and loved animals. She also loved to read and listen to music. She was a great Aunt to her nieces and nephews and was always asking about their kids, their jobs, and their activities. Kathleen loved to travel - especially to Ireland. She took great pride and interest in her family lineage, and she completed a detailed family genealogy project to share with her extended family.

Kathleen is survived by her sister Virginia Riegel, of Denver, CO; Matt Riegel (Raleigh, NC); Mike and Liz Riegel (Cary, NC) and their three children Sarah, Mark, and Megan; Marybeth and John Urrutia and their children Jack and Lexi in Littleton, CO; plus many friends and extended family in Massachusetts, Florida, Colorado, and North Carolina.

We would like to especially thank Grace Kalani and the care team at Suncoast Hospice for the exceptional care they provided Kathleen over the past year. Kathy's family would also like to extend their deepest appreciation to friends both locally and throughout the world. You all made a difference for Kathy with your continued love and support every day. She would always rave about the wonderful friends she had throughout her entire life.

Kathy and I got to know each other in 1980 working the 3-11 shift in the lab at Red Cross in Norfolk, VA. Since we lived close by in Va Beach we carpooled to work most days. We were polar opposites and always teased each other about it - Kathy would pick me up at least 10 minutes early in her big 4 door Impala, go the speed limit, listen to country music, windows up for her hair and smoking her cigarettes. Me - pick her up exactly on time with no room for error (so yes, late) in my Honda civic, always over the speed limit, rock and roll playing and windows down. Our friendship extended outside work, where we spent many a weekend night at Ocean Eddies on the pier and of course, Sir Richard´s, where she worked part time.

Kathy´s work ethic was strong, her wit unmatchable and her friendship with you lifelong, which I am so grateful for.

Ruth and I spent the week with Kathy last September when she had just gone on hospice. There was so many great stories, music (that Kathy chose, lol), laughter and tears we shared, but most of all that strong bond of love and friendship. I will miss her.

The first time I met Kathy was in the break room at Publix. She came in and pulled out her makeup before starting work. We were friends ever since.
Her since if humer was a hoot.
Kathy never held anything back.
She was one of a kind, they broke the mold when they made her.
I shared her love of animals. Kathy was so happy to meet my rescue Ellie Mae. I brought her with me when we ran errands.
I know how much she especially loved Sean and Nora. She loved her Clancy too.
She gave me a picture frame that had his name on it because I had a cat named Clancy also.
I'm glad she's back with her babies.
I will miss her, as will so many others. We can still pull up her FB page.... RIP, my friend. I will keep you in my thoughts and in my heart.
Love you lady.

Kathleen was a true friend. We had many great years working together at Publix. She had a great sense of humor revolving around the same type of humor as mine, sarcasm. She knew how to take it and dish it out. One of my favorites was her turning to me and saying, "Matt I need some advice, if you were a guy...." It always gave me a good chuckle, especially when she said that to the assistant store manager.

Kathleen loved to talk her politics, and though we were complete opposites on the political spectrum, we were always able to sit down and listen to one another, which was something unique about Kathleen. She truly cared about her friends, family, and coworkers, and valued their opinions. She was always looking out for us younger folks. Even when I had left Publix, we kept in touch with each other and she would see how I was doing. She was always writing and sharing thoughts and ideas with others. She wrote many different notes, letters, and pieces of work.

I wish her, her family and friends my deepest condolences. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. I am happy she is finally able to rest in peace and can re-meet up with her favorite cat, Sean, in Heaven. Already dearly missed.

Love, your friend,
Matthew
