Kathleen Ann Dusing

Kathleen Ann Dusing December 6, 1934-November 28, 2013 Kathleen ("Ann") passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer at the age of 78 in the Purdy Pavilion at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Bill Dusing (1993) and brothers, Vernon and Arnold. She is survived by her step-daughter Elizabeth in France (Pierre), and grandchildren Camille, Apolline, and Nina, her sister Margaret Tansey in Ottawa (Brian), and her cherished nieces Erin (Moe), Claire (Michael) and nephew Dylan (Michèle), and great-niece and nephews. A life-long scholar, Ann received her B.A. Hons. Classics at UBC in 1955, and was awarded a Taft fellowship for graduate studies at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio; as part of that program she attended the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in the summer of 1957. She received her PhD in Classics in 1979 from the University of Cincinnati. On her return to British Columbia, she taught in the Department of Classics at UBC until her retirement in 1998. Her research interests included Cassius Dio and the Severan age, Roman imperial history, women in antiquity, and archaic Greek history. A pioneer in telling the story of women in antiquity and making the details relevant to modern life, Ann was highly regarded by both colleagues and students and won the Killam Teaching Prize in 1997. A woman of great intelligence and a wry sense of humour, she was a lover of chamber music, travel, and fine scotch. The family wishes to thank Rinku Kaur, Dr. Beveridge, and the staff at the Purdy Pavilion for their care and assistance. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA or to a charity of choice are welcomed. A memorial will be scheduled in the New Year.
