A Woman Who Lived Three Remarkable Lives
Kathleen Mary McGrath Mahaffey Zinda, born October 13, 1942, in San Francisco, California, passed away, leaving a legacy marked by love, adventure, and spiritual depth. Known for her lively spirit, Kathleen embraced every facet of her 81 years with a zeal that left an indelible impression on the countless lives she touched.
Growing up in Burlingame, California, Kathleen's first chapter was shaped by her childhood in a vibrant Irish Catholic family, where she was one of five siblings. Educated in Catholic schools, Kathleen formed friendships that lasted a lifetime with three women who stood by her side through the many twists and turns of life. Here, Kathleen developed her enduring love for community and connection, foundations that would carry her through all her future endeavors.
Her second life began when she met and married Michael Mahaffey, embarking on a new adventure as a mother and partner. As the family expanded with the births of Colleen, Shana, and Brendan, she and Michael moved to Lake Tahoe. Kathleen and Michael shared a love of the outdoors and built a life in the Sierras filled with skiing and endless family gatherings. Kathleen kept the books for the family business, The Inn Shop, where she applied her sharp intellect and sense of order to the task at hand. She also reveled in the joy of hosting, and it wasn't long before their home became the heart of countless memories for family and friends alike. Kathleen infused her love for celebration into every corner of her family's life, making sure everyone knew the words to every Freddy Fender and Neil Diamond song. The family left Lake Tahoe for Connemara Ranch in Pilot Hill, California. Kathleen became a talented equestrian there, and her connection to horses reflected her deep affinity for nature and grace. She embraced the physicality of riding with elegance and was known for her skillful seat and bond with her horses.
Her third and final chapter saw Kathleen re-emerge in a new light. After building a successful career in property management, she and her husband, Dennis Zinda, retired to the mountains, where she found her true happiness once again. Camping, hiking, and reconnecting with nature brought her joy and peace. In these serene surroundings, Kathleen deepened her spiritual practice, becoming a widely regarded medium and tarot card reader sought out by friends and acquaintances alike. Back in the wilderness, she cherished, her spiritual wisdom and intuitive gifts flourished, enriching the vibrant tapestry of her remarkable life.
Kathleen's warmth, laughter, and love of life's pleasures-parties, presents, and desserts-carried through all her years. She never lost her joy in connecting with others, and her presence was a gift to all who knew her. She leaves behind many family and friends, including her beloved children, Colleen, Shana, and Brendan; her cherished grandchildren and great-grandaughter, Jordan, Danielle, Sada, Ahren, and Alexis; her treasured siblings, Joan and Dan; her devoted husband, Dennis; and her loyal companion, Nej. We can be certain that as Kathleen crossed the threshold into the afterlife, she was warmly welcomed by the many souls she touched during her time on earth.
Requiescat in pace, Kathleen. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
