Kathleen Spyker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 27, 2017.
Kathleen (Key) Spyker passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Oct 20th, 2017. She was born July 8th 1934 in Coderre, SK to Francis and Doris Carey. She grew up on a farm with her older siblings Cal, Frank and Anna, and favoured cousin Sadie Newman. The neighbouring farms were filled with her aunts, uncles and cousins with many family gatherings held at the nearby Shamrock Park. As a young woman she worked as a minister's aide in the provincial government, living in Regina with her son Cliff in the home of Norm and Ede Ewen, who became life long friends. She, her husband Walter, and Cliff settled in Saskatoon in 1960 where Rick and James were born. Kay enjoyed being a mother and home maker, keeping her family happy, well fed and dressed in handmade shirts and sweaters. Kay and Walt were avid square and round dancers, helping organize events and with many friends in the dancing community. After Walt's passing in 1988 Kay began working as a tax preparer for H&R Block. Her quick mind made her a favourite with her clients and her friendly nature provided her a whole new set of friends amongst her fellow preparers. She also became an avid bridge player, even going on occasional road trips to out of town competitions. In 2012 she moved to Calgary to be closer to family including the growing set of great grandchildren. She is survived by her sister Anna Fay, her sons Cliff (Sheila), Rick (Karen) and James. After raising three boys she was rewarded with five granddaughters Connie, Chris (Steve), Michelle (Andy), Jennessa and Tasia and six great grandchildren Norah, Zeth, Hudson, Cal, Owen and Murray.

We are saddened to hear about Kay. She was a very special neighbor and a good friend. She treated Joel like her own grandson and we will always cherish our time spent together.

Our condolences to her family,
Charlie and Rhonda

To Kay's Family, Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your beautiful mother and grandmother. I knew Kay from the Saskatoon Bridge Club. We played regularly on Tuesday night and even won the Club Championship one year. I fondly remember her proudly knitting for her grandchildren, her welcoming smile and of course her competitive spirit. Cherish your fond memories of a beautiful lady.
Sincerely,
Maureen Scott
