Kathleen Wallenius Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 11 to Jan. 12, 2023.
Kathleen Ellen Zajac Wallenius passed away on November 18, 2022 at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, NC with her husband, Richard, and daughters, Brooke and Kristen, by her side. She was 76 years old.

Born on March 25, 1946 in Meriden, CT, Kathleen was the only child of the late Helen and Henry Zajac. She spent much of childhood with a multitude of aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Geary and Zajac families. Kathleen's strong inter-generational relationships with her extended family instilled in her a love of family, Irish and Polish traditions, holiday celebrations, and traveling.

Kathleen graduated from Maloney High School in 1964 and majored in English and History at The University of Connecticut. Upon graduating in 1968, she immediately began working in Meriden Public Schools. She spent her 37-year career first teaching, then as a guidance counselor at Nathan Hale and Hanover elementary schools. Kathleen cherished her role as an educator and always made herself available when a student needed support, advice, or a caring ear to listen.

Kathleen was always planning trips for her family and herself on school breaks. Her daughters have fond memories of trips along the East Coast, Ireland to visit distant relatives, an epic adventure covering ten of the western United States, and the family's annual summer escape to Eastham, MA on Cape Cod Bay. In retirement, Kathleen and Richard traveled with friends across Europe, Alaska, China, Egypt, and South America where Kathleen hiked to the summit of Machu Picchu at 72 years old. Throughout her life, Kathleen spent time on every continent in the world except Antarctica.

Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2007, Kathleen fought hard and was in remission the following year. In true fashion Kathleen did not slow down. Over the next 15 years as a pancreatic cancer survivor, she continued to travel, volunteer, plan family celebrations, care for her aging parents, connect with friends on the annual "Ladies' Road Trip", work in her yard, treasure and spoil her grandchildren, and more. In 2019, Kathleen and Richard relocated from Southington, CT to Southport, NC, fulfilling her dream of living near the ocean. In her final years, Kathleen made new connections with friends, joined a tennis team, volunteered at the library and local charity organizations, and spent hours at the beach.

Kathleen is survived by her husband of 39 years, Richard Wallenius of Southport, NC; daughters Brooke Davis (Charles) of Chapel Hill, NC and Kristen Park (Matthew) of Westbrook, CT; stepdaughters Lea Engels (Steve) of Westbrook, CT and Courtney Dwyer (Michael) of Huntington, CT; ten grandchildren Kathleen adored deeply and her beloved West Highland Terrier, Tish; numerous cherished cousins and their children, and a multitude of friends who she considered family.

A day of remembrance and celebration of Kathleen's life is planned for April 8, 2023 at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home in Meriden, CT. In remembering Kathleen and honoring her legacy, donations may be made to Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org), St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org), or an organization of your choosing.

Hello my friends.... How are you doing Richard? Kat was such a dear friend.
I think of her all the time. I'm so glad to have known her even if it was for a short time. We loved to have lunch out.....EGGS UP Grill was our favorite.
Then we would go over to Marshall's. We wound up buying the same PJ set
with a Halloween theme. We went to the movies together. Kat was always so friendly and never complained about her health issues. I was a former teacher in Ct. as well. I taught 1st grade in Woodbury. We both loved our pups.
I remember little TISH the Westie. My 1st dog was a Westie. I remember when Brooke got her new pup from Crockett Doodles. How is he doing? I purchased
my Mini Bernedoodle Sundae Rose from the Crockett Doodles too. Sundae is 3 now.
Kat lived life to the fullest and died much too early. She brought Sunshine to everyone she met. I will NEVER forget her. She was an avid reader and I loved picking up her favorite books from our library in St. James.
I hope all of you know how lucky you were to have such a wonderful Mom and wife in your lives. Sincerely JoAnne Waer

Kathy was a burst of energy. She was involved in many organizations both in school and outside of school. She got me involved and got me into playing tennis with her and friends. She made everyone feel special! We went on vacations together and our daughters grew up together and did many things together. Kathy is still in my thought and prayers and will forever be there. God bless her. Hope we someday meet again! Love you more!

Richard, Brooke, and Kristen,
I am so sorry for your loss. Kathy always made me feel like part of your family. I remember meeting her at Mountain Grove and we spent many carefree summers there! I also remember all the swim meets and practices that Kristen and Kate were participating in and sitting in the warm aquatic facilities with Dick and Kathy. Brooke was our lifesaver babysitter for years and then both she and Kevin became Elon alumni!
I will always remember her as kind, loving, and generous! I am sure she is smiling down on all of us now!
I wish I could be there on Saturday but my thoughts will be with you! Kate is planning to attend the celebration of life!
Kathy was truly a gift to all!

I was surprised and saddened to hear of Kathy's death. I remember her with that infectious smile, first as one of my students and later as a friend, married to Dick. God added another angel much too early. May she rest in His hands. She will be missed. Rich Hackbarth

I was so honored and fortunate to have Kathy as a dear friend. She was so easy to talk to and had an uncanny way of delving into one´s inner thoughts and feelings and getting you to share your personal feelings. Ken and I enjoyed the many vacations that we took with Kathy, Richard and the Mazur´s traveling throughout Europe as well as the weekends on the Cape. Kathy was such a caring, sensitive and intuitive friend that I am missing tremendously.

Richard and family. We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dearest friend. We had many wonderful memories together with Kristen and Ashley growing up together living a street away, going on vacations together and enjoying each other´s company. We also spent many times together going out , taking trips to the Cape as well as Italy, Egypt, Portugal, Belgium and just spending time together holding hands, walking and sitting next to each other. I also belonged to AAUW with her. She will forever be in our hearts and minds. Our sincere prayers and wishes to you all! Love, Bev & Mitch
