Kathryn George Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 29, 2015.
Kathryn E. George, 72, passed away at 11:25 a.m., on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at the Via Christi Village, after a battle with cancer.

She was born on September 21, 1942, at Pittsburg, KS, to Howard B. and Ellen (Harper) Harry.  She attended Pittsburg schools and graduated from PHS in 1960.

She worked as a clerk in the Kress Store when the Mall first opened.  Later she worked as a bookkeeper for Dr. M. Freeman and a payroll clerk for Clemens Coal Co. until it closed.  Over the years, she played for many funerals and weddings, but her greatest joy was being the organist for Grace United Methodist Church for the past 50 years.  She was at one time a member of the noon Kiwanis and Treasurer for Progressive Study Club.

Kathryn married David George on December 3, 1960, at Pittsburg, sharing many endeavors together from remodeling houses to beekeeping.  They were one of the first vendors at the Farmer's Market when it was first organized.  Kathryn also did embroidery and crochet, making blankets for the nursery at Via Christi.

Kathryn is survived by her husband, David of the home; a son, Larry George and his wife, Paula of Pittsburg and one grandson, Kyle George of Topeka, KS; a brother, Glen Harry and his wife, Gail of Canton, MI and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 31, 2015, at the Brenner Mortuary with Reverend Glen Duderstadt officiating.  Burial will follow in the Crocker Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Thursday, at the Brenner Mortuary.  The family suggests memorials to The Muscular Dystrophy Association or Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.  These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 East 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762.  Friends may leave condolences online at www.brennermortuary.com.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.

Larry, I will always remember how kind your Mother was to me during your baseball years. Those were great years, when you played for First State Bank as you were a talented ballplayer. I was blessed to know your Mother. I share your sadness.

Glen and family. I can't begin to list all the wonderful music Kathryn made at Grace Church. She was a great friend, musician and blessing to all of us who were lucky enough to perform with her. I will be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

May the God of all comfort strengthen the entire family during this time of sorrow. Those who die God keeps in his memory because they are precious in his eyes. (Psalms 116:15) My sincerest sympathies.

I've known Kathryn all my life - from kindergarten through high school and on when we had kids. I remember how us young mothers had a "card" club. How we ever played cards with 5 or 6 kids running around in diapers is beyond me. Kathryn was such a talented person - I envied her ability to play the piano. She played for our wedding almost 54 years ago and she played for the funerals of my parents. The community, as a whole, will miss her.
