KATHRYN HULBERT Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 11 to Oct. 14, 2009.
Kathryn "Deon" Robinson Hulbert 1925 ~ 2009 Deon Hulbert lived a wonderful life filled with love. To her children she was "the best mom in the world," and to Carl A. Hulbert, her husband of 64 years, she was "the love of his life." She peacefully passed October 10, 2009, surrounded by her loving friends and family. On March 26, 1925 Deon was born to Charles Lewis and Catherine "Grace" Bills Robinson. She spent her childhood in Salt Lake City and Grantsville, Utah with her seven brothers and sisters: Wayne, Dean, June, Grant, Bryce, Beverly and Larry. Riding the family's horses, doing word puzzles with her mother, eating hot homemade bread were some of her favorite pastimes and memories growing up. She attended East High School where she graduated with honors. Education was extremely important to Deon. She had a quick, intelligent mind, always curious about the world. Deon and Carl travelled extensively, especially enjoying their trips with their many friends around the world. Deon met "the love of her life," Carl A. Hulbert, in 1943 and had wonderful memories including dancing at the Rainbow Rendezvous. They married February 12, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. Family was of paramount importance to Deon, especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her family always knew they were loved, hugs and kisses were Deon's favorites (xoxoxox). We will always have treasured memories of family trips and gatherings. Everyone who met Deon loved her. She had no enemies. She had an amazing sense of humor and was always happy. Walking down the street with her was often time-consuming. She gave everyone she passed a big smile, and often would stop to talk. Small children were her very favorite, deserving her full attention; a wave, a nod, a smile and a big "Hello." Deon was active in a number of community, church, and social groups. She especially enjoyed being a Scouts leader, PTA President, working with Assistance League, Investment Club, and her many Bridge Clubs and Bowling Leagues. Deon is survived by her husband, Carl A. Hulbert, and their children: Kathryn Deon Penske (Roger), their children Mark Hulbert Penske (Lori), Jay Carl Penske, Blair Hall (Brandon), and four great grandchildren; JoAnn Hulbert-Eagan, her daughter, Meghan Jo Eagan (Ryan Heffernan) and one great grandchild; Steven Carl Hulbert (Cathy); David Robinson Hulbert (Buffy), their children Carl Alexander Hulbert, David Winston Hulbert, Kathryn Elizabeth Hulbert, Helen Lucy Hulbert; Jan Gatrell (Scott), their children Emily Deon Waldbillig (Trygg), Tory Hulbert Gatrell (Adriane), Jennifer Jan Gatrell, Michael Scott Gatrell, Carl Gordon Gatrell, and four great grandchildren; Shag Hulbert, his two children, Carl Arthur Hulbert, Taylor Deon Hulbert, and two sisters-in-law, Eleanor H. Barker (James), Bunny H. Fine (Dr. Irving). She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters and parents-in-law. The family would like to extend heartfelt "Thanks" to all who cared and loved our Deon. They provided her the opportunity to remain at home. Special thanks to Sharon Alder, Barbara Richardson, Sonnie Holmberg, and our wonderful neighbors, Eric and Sue Martin. A visitation will be held Wednesday, October 14, 2009 from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 S. Highland Drive, SLC, UT. Funeral services will be Thursday, October 15, 12:00 p.m., at Valley View Ward, 3900 South 20th East, with a visitation one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment to follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Association Utah Chapter 855 E. 4800 S. St 100, SLC, UT 84107

Uncle Carl,

Our condolences to you and the family. Aunt Deon was such a beautiful spirit; with so much love for everyone. She was open, honest and always kind. There are many who will have already welcomed her to her new home...my Mom included.

With all our love,

Christine (Reynolds) Wilkins and family.

Dear Hulberts-

I'm so sorry for your loss, but so glad that Deon has been released from her earthly suffering. Having just lost my mom, I think I may have some familiarity with the flood of feelings, both sweet and painful, that you are going through. Deon was such a sweet, gracious and FUNNY person. She always made me feel welcome in your home. She was somehow able to artfully separate the me who was Dave's friend from the me who was the despicable litte crud who tortured her weekly in her primary class. She broiled the first (and best) t-bone steak I've ever eaten. I will always remember her fondly. Unfortunately I will be out of town and will be unable to attend the viewing or funeral. I want you to know my thoughs, prayers and good wishes will be with all of you. Love always, Paul Rasmussen
