Kathryn (Kate) Judith Larue

Kate Larue died May 7, 2017, in her home. With strong optimistic determination she had struggled for a decade fighting cancer. Her last days, during in-home hospice care, were with the support and presence of family and dear friends.

She is survived by: daughter, Lisa Lockhart, of Klamath Falls OR; granddaughter Hamilah Lockhart of Klamath Falls; granddaughter Jayne Riggs of Reno; great-grandchildren, Thomas and Fay, of Reno; son, David Lockhart, of Amelia OH; grandson Caleb Lockhart of Dayton NV and partner of 13 years, Alan Schenker. Kate is also survived by an extensive village of loving, caring, intimate family and friends in Reno and beyond, including: cousins Shan, Nicole and Eric Magnuson, of Berkeley CA, Santa Rosa CA, and England, respectively cousin Pat Larue of Anchorage AK. Kate was a Reno resident since the 1960s. Her lively, generous personality will be missed but fond memories are forever. Kate was known for her fine cooking and love of intimate dinners at her and friends' homes, conversation lasting well into the evening. Often she prepared meals from her book, MAKING LOVE IN THE KITCHEN, a collection of her favorite recipes, copies of which may be found on the shelves of many family members and friends. In 2015 Kate published IN SPITE OF MYSELF - AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.

Recently, Kate took up the Irish drum (bodhran) after visiting the South Coast Celtic Festival in North Bend OR and, later, Ireland (a trip which included attendance at traditional music performances). In Reno she studied under a teacher at Mountain Music Parlor and participated in "jams" at Ceol, a local Irish pub. She made many new music friends and found these experiences highly rewarding.

Kate also liked to travel and in recent years visited Ireland, the Oregon coast, Kauai, Santa Fe, and many other places. She was also active as a volunteer in Friends of Washoe County Library. Kate had a love of horses since childhood, riding whenever she could, admiring and enjoying the horses of friends in Reno and elsewhere. She derived great pleasure from her last time in the saddle, on the hard-packed beach sands of Bandon OR.

No services. Donations may be made in memory of Kate to Friends of Washoe County Library (washoecountyfriends.org) and Renown Institute for Cancer (renown.org).

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Kate was a beautiful person and soul and so interesting to be around. We knew each other from our employment at RTC. We shared our passion for horses and cooking often. I am so grateful to have one of her cook books. I am truly and deeply saddened to learn of her passing. My condolences to her family. Rest in Peace my friend. Connie Brant
