Katie Soenksen Obituary
Pfc. Soenksen died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, in West Baghdad, Iraq, while participating with U.S. Forces in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Katie was born May 20, 1987, in Davenport, a daughter of Ronald L. and Mary Ann (Lovejoy) Soenksen. Katie was united in marriage to Specialist Benjamin Rowella, U.S. Army, Fort Hood, Texas.
She attended John F. Kennedy Catholic Elementary School in Davenport and graduated from Davenport North High School in 2005. While at North she participated in choir, softball and the ROTC Program. She enlisted in the Army immediately after graduation and was a member of the 410th Military Police Company, Fort Hood, Texas.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Army Emergency Relief Organization www.aerhq.org/; North High School Activities Program; a college fund for Katie's nieces or to the JFK Tuition Fund.
Survivors include her husband, Benjamin; parents, Ron and Mary Ann Soenksen, Davenport; a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Eric Goodin, Blue Springs, Missouri; a brother, Matt Soenksen, Davenport; nieces, Aria Goodin, Audrienna Soenksen and Braylee Gillespie; grandmother, Erma Stephens, Bettendorf; aunts, Maureen Bergom, Bettendorf; Vicky (Darrell) Peterson, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Beverly (Russell) Babb, Johnston, Iowa; Connie Wight, Dennison, Iowa; Lt. Colonel Rose Ramirez USAF and Manny Ramirez, San Antonio, Texas; uncles, Roger (Georgia) Lovejoy, Bettendorf; Frank (Debbie) Lovejoy, Davenport; Steve (Cindy) Lovejoy, Bettendorf; and Warren "Tony" (Sheila) Lovejoy, Davenport; as well as numerous loving cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by grandparents, Warren and Donna Lovejoy and Walter Soenksen. The family also wants to acknowledge those in her platoon who so heroically attempted to defend her life, as well as for Connor an Iraqi interpreter who sacrificed his life to help save hers. May they rest in peace.

Hi Katie, it´s 2025 now. I dropped out of college and enlisted into the Air Force. I was struggling in college, I still miss you. I´m a year older than you now, I don´t know how to feel about it. I´m also married now, he´s so kind to me. I wish you could been here for everything. I´m at my first duty station now, I´ll be here for a while, I added a picture I took the other day for you. Katie was the lil strawberry blonde down the street with popsicle stains on her mouth - a smile that was bigger than ever.... swimming in the kiddie pool with our son Daniel - she mother'd him and he would follow her around the yard and play for hours - as she became a young girl - her smile only got bigger, she was beautiful inside and out - I recall the evening - we saw the vehicle come down the drive and I knew, as I am an Army brat and had family in the military praying it was not for us/our family - and they turned around in our drive and headed out - I watched, only to see them turn in the drive of Katie's parents driveway and I started to cry...the car was there too long - my husband & I walked the few houses down after they left and it was true, another solider was gone and you never think it will be you or someone you know... she was young, smart, funny and had a path cut too short. She will never be forgotten as we drive and walk by her childhood home every day. We know you are smiling down upon us - but wish you were here - I cant even think what you be like today - almost 18 years later - you were too young Katrina Masakowski

I was Battalion Surgeon for 2-12 Cav and did everything I could to save Katie that day in May 2007.
Paid my respects at her grave last year and will do my best to honor her sacrifice in the way I, and those around me, live our lives.

I do this race for you and the others we’ve lost Katie. It hurts to run it, but it’s a good route and there’s nice people, and dogs. I have a great best friend, her and her boyfriend drove me to the race this year after I waited 2 years to do it again. I know I barely knew you, but I feel like I’ve known you forever and I miss you so much that it hurts. I wish you were here, mom wouldn’t be sad about you, she doesn’t show it often, but I let her cry when she does on the rare occasion. We both just stand there hugging and crying. I’m in college now, I wish I could see how proud you are. I’m going to join the Air Force after college, I couldn’t bring myself to join the Army, I wish I could’ve for you though. It’s almost been 15 years and I still remember getting that call like it was yesterday. We had just been messaging each other a few days before, we were making plans to celebrate our birthdays together when you got home. So I try not to remember that day, I choose to remember all the good times we had, like going to see Larry the cable guy when you won tickets on the radio, tons of JROTC fun and school dances. The Fort Snelling Memorial Chapel Foundation will be honoring your loved one at the non-denominational Christian Memorial Day Remembrance worship service at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, 26 May 2013. We will remember the casualties of the Global War on Terrorism from Minnesota … and the bordering states of Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Outside of the historic Fort Snelling Veterans Memorial Chapel will be a “Memorial Garden” filled with some 300 white crosses bearing the names of the war dead … including your loved one.
The Memorial Garden will be encircled with larger white crosses representing all of the wars of our nation's history and give honor to all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today. Wreaths will be placed at the foot of each 8-foot cross bearing the number of U.S. Service Members killed in each of America's conflicts.
I would like to extend to your family an invitation to honor us with your presence at worship as we pay tribute to the sacrifice made by your service member and family. Our pastor, Kenneth L. Beale, Jr., will preach a message entitled, “Freedom:Free, but Costly.” At the conclusion of the worship hour, all of the congregation will be invited to silently pay their respects at the garden and there place poppies at each of the crosses. A Memorial Rifle Squad of the Fort Snelling National Cemetery will fire vollies as the US flag is lowered to half-staff and Taps is played. Following your visit to the Memorial Garden, your family is invited to attend an informal reception (weather permitting) outside of the Chapel. The Memorial Garden will remain until 5:00 p.m. on Monday, 27 May (Memorial Day).
As this Christian worship service has traditionally been well attended, we would be happy to reserve seating for you and yours. To do so, kindly call (651/286-7296) and leave a voice message indicating your veterans' name and the number of persons attending. You are invited to stop by, light a candle and place it at the foot of your loved one's cross in the Memorial Garden … and then enter the Chapel for prayer.
