Kenneth Thomas Adkison UPPER Kenneth Thomas Adkison, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and devoted public servant, went home in the arms of the Lord's glorious angels on September 17, 2025 at the age of 87, in Galveston County, Texas.
Born in Gadsden, Alabama, on September 2, 1938, Kenneth grew up in the heart of the South and attended Gadsden High School. He later made his life along the Texas Gulf Coast, living for many years on Galveston Island before retiring to the peaceful woods of the family camp in Ivanhoe, Texas.
Kenneth served honorably in the Army National Guard and dedicated much of his professional life to the Galveston Fire Department, where he rose to the role of Assistant Fire Chief. His leadership extended beyond the station, when he co-founded A-1 Fire Equipment Company with his long-time friend and co-worker, W. T. Jay. He is still greatly remembered today by his firemen he led and worked alongside through the years; known affectionately as "my Chief" and "one of the good guys". He was fiercely proud of his brothers in service and advocated tirelessly for their well-being and recognition.
A man of deep Christian faith, Kenneth was a loving and affectionate presence - a strong and gentle leader, not just to his own family, but to many who saw him as a father figure. He found joy in God's creation, sharing his love of nature, fishing, archery, scuba diving, and the outdoors with his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. Even his daughters' closest friends saw him as a mentor and father figure; enjoying his wisdom, kindness and laughter. An artist at heart, he expressed himself through painting and clay sculpture, leaving behind not only memories but tangible pieces of beauty and meaning.
He was a loyal Alabama Crimson Tide fan who never missed a game and deeply believed in giving back, helping others, and honoring his country.
Kenneth is survived by his loving daughters, Terese Adkison Butler and Kathy Marie Adkison; his grandchildren Brian Adkison, Jordan Butler(Eva), Ross Butler(Kiley), Kyle Butler(Angela), Haley Herrin Murphy(Luke), and Davy Herrin(Lindsey), thirteen great grandchildren, and a host of extended family and dear friends.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Archer Adkison; his daughter Mary Beth Adkison; his parents, Felton Thomas Adkison and Katherine Margaret Fells Adkison; and his brother, Bobby Dean Adkison.
His most cherished sayings - "Bless your heart", "Roll Tide" along with some others- will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A private family ceremony will be held in the mountains and waterfalls of Gadsden, Alabama - where his story began, and where he will return to rest in peace.
