Kenneth Armwood Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
Kenneth Armwood, or "Kenny" as many of his friends called him, was a man who put the world before himself. Whether you grew up with him in Newark, Irvington, or Piscataway, or had the privilege of walking beside him at a local parade, he knew your mother's name and asked about a recent event in your life. He remembered from the last conversation you had with him and he kept up with your victories online. He did this because he loved you and wanted you to succeed. Kenny was born in Newark, NJ, on October 15,1974, and sadly passed away suddenly on Monday, March 29, 2021, at the young age of 46. His short time on earth had a huge impact on so many of us and has left a void in all of our lives. He had high standards for himself and his community. That is why when he experienced injustices in high school, he ran for a position on the Piscataway School Board and won at the age of 19. He knew you couldn't just talk about it, you had to be about it. He personified that as a young public official over his six years spent advocating for youth in Piscataway. He is predeceased by his mother, Verdelle Armwood, who passed away in 2000. Kenny was only 26 when he lost his mother, and left public office for a few years after her passing. During that time, Kenny rededicated himself to following in his mother's footsteps of helping others. He began quietly mentoring young men and women in the community, making sure that everyone had access to the same opportunities, or more, than he did. While working at the Red Cross for many years, he had a chance to visit and help kids around the world. He was chosen to help provide assistance for a service learning program at the University of Balamand in Lebanon. This was an experience that he felt very honored to be a part of. His infectious smile and great political mind only gave him a four year reprieve, and Kenny was asked to run for a position on the Piscataway Municipal Council in 2004. He served on the Council until 2013, and was selected by his peers as the Council President in 2008 and 2013. He was soon tapped to fill a vacancy on the then named County Board of Chosen Freeholders. He was the second African American ever elected to the Board and, in 2020, was selected by his peers as the Deputy Director of the County Board. All the while, he never forgot where he came from and what was most important to him. He made sure to incorporate the former Superintendent of Piscataway Dr. Dan Rodriguez, a man he considered a father and who helped him throughout his career, part of his swearing in ceremony in 2019, and his cousin Valerie held his mother's Bible while he took the historic oath as the First African American Deputy Director of the County Board. He also was at the forefront to change the title "Freeholder" to "County Commissioner" to create a more inclusive environment and remove the negative connotations of the word "Freeholder". While serving as an elected official on the county level, Kenny was able to bring people from all over New Jersey together to make the biggest impact locally. No one truly understands what the county government does, but if you had a few minutes to spare, Kenny would tell you why it was important to find out and why it was important to get involved. "Ya gotta do something," is a phrase you'd often hear in every speech. Whether it was a Get Out The Vote rally, a Black Lives Matter protest, or a long talk with one of his mentees from JobCorps, you immediately felt compelled to change the world. He had that effect on you. Kenny's extended family of friends will be hosting a viewing from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, April 2, and Saturday, April 3, at The Crabiel Home for Funerals, located at 170 N Main Street-at Riva Avenue, Milltown. A funeral to celebrate his life will be held on the field he called his solace, the Piscataway High School Football Stadium, located at 100 Behmer Road, Piscataway, on Monday, April 5, beginning at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will be held at Lake Nelson Memorial Park in Piscataway. Masks and all COVID-19 social distancing guidelines required at all events. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Kenneth Armwood Memorial Scholarship Fund and mailed to 2 Pucillo Lane, Somerset, NJ 08873. Kindergarten. 1980. That's how long we've been friends. I loved you everyday since that day we met on the N. Stelton playground, and loved you ever since. You were like my brother. From that day back in 1980, through our graduation in 1993, and even beyond. You were always my "good" influence. I will always love you my brother. Rest in peace.

My brother kenny I was shocked to hear of your passing. We go back to Middle school basketball, I remember when you and Joel Rumbleheart was on my team and you beat me out for the starting spot I was upset and you told me dont worry about we all are going to play ,I never forgot that to this day and never will! I always knew you would do great things in life by the kind of person you were. Always had that smile to light up a room kind funny etc. I remember My mother and your mother sitting at our games together she was a great Woman who loved you a lot. Our friendship wasnt as strong when I moved to S. Plainfield for a couple of years and came back but I remember we talked again reminiscing over our middle school days. We played football together and after our Senior year a lot of people went their own Separate ways in life. I relocated to Va with my family and never really stayed in touch but just know u will never be forgotten and u will always b a friend to me . I hope to see again one day until then rest in power but most of all rest in peace!

Middlesex County and the state of New Jersey lost a very vital member of their community on the day of your passing! I remember when I first met you the Pines Manor for one of Democratic Committee Annual functions. Your infectious smile lit up the room and made me feel comfortable because this was one of my first meetings. I always looked for you at these functions that sometimes became more business and political and needed a little more of a personal touch just as you gave with that infection smile. On one occasion at Middlesex College when I attended a rally featuring then Senator Barack Obama as guest speaker for Gov. Corizine, I had given out passes to my friend but left my own at home. I walked up to you and explained what had happened and you conveniently escorted me to the door so that I could enter.I will never forget you not only for the little things ; but serving your community well. You started out young and accomplish much in your short lifetime. Rest In Peace my brother, son and fellow elected official of Middlesex County. Your legacy will live on in our hearts. Gonna miss you my brother. We go back to middle school basketball. Then we became friends in high school on the freshmen football field. We had a lot of the same classes but were never in the same class, so we often traded stories (and homework assignments) about our teachers. We went our separate ways after high school but, as brothers do, we found our way back when we were both back in Piscataway. When I decided to switch careers and go into counseling you were one of my first calls. you invited me to spend the day with you at Job Corps. I got see how you won the respect of all of your students by being honest and straight-forward. I stole your approach when I got into my profession.
I would see you at every event around town and throughout Middlesex County. Always greeted me with a smile, a big hug and a story. I looked forward to hearing you speak because you were always candid with your audience. You helped make me who I am and I will always think of you whenever I go to any Piscataway event.
Love you bro

Kenny was one of the most caring people I have ever had the pleasure to interact with. Not only was he one of the best friends my son could possibly have, he always bought a smile to my face and warmed my heart. I remember talking to Kenny about a new program we were starting at PHS called AVID. As usual he found a way to help me implement the program by coming often as a speaker for my students and arranging for my students to work with a professor at Rutgers to learn how to be student activists. The world is less bright now that you're gone.

Kenny was an originalalways dedicated to public service and supporting his community, and especially our youth. Kenny and I shared a mentee, a young college student, and our last conversation was about how we could support her navigation through college onto adulthoodhe said, I'll always have her back, and he meant it. That is one example of how Kenny embraced our young peopleto lift them up, even as he worked to lift everyone in his sphere. We have suffered an incalculable loss, with which I know many of us are still coming to terms. We will miss you, Kenny, your laughter, your joy, and your deep, lifelong investment in our shared community. May all his family, friends, loved ones, and extended political family be comforted by the beautiful memories of this amazing man. Rest in Heaven, my brother. What a incredible loss to Piscataway, Kenny was truly Piscataway's favorite son. I will miss his wide smile and cheerful greetings. I had the pleasure of knowing him since he was elected to the township Board of Education. He was a great supporter of the Piscataway DVCIT and for many years arranged for us to host his birthday bash as a fundraiser for the team. We will miss him immensely. Gone much too soon. RIP with the Lord, Kenny.

So many knew you as a government official.. But many of us started with knowing you as Dad. I'm still trying to process the loss of you. As heartbroken as I am because you are no longer here with us , I am equally honored to have been able to call you Dad. To see all the lives you touched and all the many things you've accomplished in life gives me comfort knowing you had a special purpose and you fulfilled it to the very end. I love you Dad and I will miss you terribly.. I promise I'll think you in everything I do and make you proud to have called me a daughter. Until we meet again.. I love you and Sleep in Heaven with the Angels ♥
