Kenneth Dawson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 19, 2016.
Born in Edmonton at the Royal Alex Hospital to the late Kate and Julius Dawson, survived by sister Shirley, wife Marg, children Laurie (Floyd), Barry (Kathy), Dale (Cathy), Wade (Denise) and grandchildren Ryan, Kira and Jack. Ken lived a very busy successful life starting out with his education at H.A. Grey School, Victoria Composite High School and then two years at SAIT to prepare to apprentice as an auto mechanic. He built and and worked at his two successful businesses, Dawson Motors and Marvick Automotive Supply, his entire life with his mother and father and sons Barry and Dale. In 1944, he joined the 28th Pack Wolf Cubs followed by Boy Scouts, then enrolled in accordion lessons. In 1956, he started stock car racing at Speedway Park. During his 6 years of racing, he won the 100 Lap Silver Cup, the 100 Lap Tiger Matan Memorial and came in second in the 200 Lap Gold Cup Race. He was voted most popular driver for several years and top in points several times. In 1959, Ken married Marg Holland and they had four children: Laurie, Barry, Dale and Wade. He enjoyed fishing, water skiing, the Edmonton Oilers, travelling, country music and the family cabin at Alberta Beach. Ken appreciated time with his wonderful wife, family (especially his grandchildren), friends and customers. As per Ken's wishes, there will be no funeral. A celebration of Ken's life will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cross Cancer Hospital or a charity of choice.

Laurie and Family,
Please accept our sincere and heartfelt condolences of the passing of your dad. Change is inevitable but it is a sad day for our entire Glengarry, Killarney, Athlone and Rosslyn communities who have always had the cornerstone Dawson Motors to 'greet' us while entering or leaving our homes. We will miss seeing Ken working the pumps or chatting with customers but never too busy to give you a smile and a wave. Peace to you and your families. Your friends from the Queen Elizabeth CHS Class of 1979.
