Kenneth Melvin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2025.
Sir Knight Kenneth Wayne "Ken" Melvin, age 84, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, in Sandy Springs, Georgia. A devoted servant of faith, family, and country, Ken's life was marked by unwavering dedication to others and a deep commitment to his spiritual calling.

Born on March 1, 1941, in Durham, North Carolina, Ken pursued higher education at the Emory School of Business. His early years laid the foundation for a life of service that would span decades and touch countless lives.

In 1961, Ken enlisted in the United States Air Force and served honorably at Bethesda Naval Air Base as a medic and physical therapist. There, he worked closely with soldiers returning from Vietnam, offering care and rehabilitation during their time of need. His military service reflected his lifelong compassion and sense of duty.

Ken's professional journey continued in the skies as a pilot for Angel Flight, where he provided air transportation services to medically fragile patients. His work ensured that those facing serious health challenges could access critical care-often when no other options were available. This mission of mercy was just one of many ways Ken lived out his faith through action.

Ordained by the Archdiocese of Atlanta in 2006 as a permanent deacon, Deacon Ken served faithfully at several parishes including St. Jude Catholic Church, All Saints Catholic Church, Corpus Christi Catholic Church, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church until his retirement in 2017. As a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and Deacon, he offered spiritual guidance and support to parishioners and those seeking comfort during difficult times. He was also known for capturing cherished memories as the photographer for many special church events-his lens often revealing the joy and unity within his community.

Ken's generosity extended far beyond his church walls. He opened his heart and home to children in need and sponsored numerous refugees fleeing persecution. Through his efforts, many found safety and independence in the United States-a testament to his belief in human dignity and freedom.

At home, Ken found joy in photography, computer programming, mountain biking through nature's trails, and feeding the deer that visited his yard-simple pleasures that reflected his appreciation for beauty and peace.

He is survived by Linda Gail Melvin, his beloved wife of 60 years; their daughter Kristina Sanford; and grandchildren Brandon Melvin and Kimberly Sanford. His legacy also lives on through the many lives he touched with kindness and compassion.

Ken was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Atla Melvin; and brothers Raymond Melvin and Wesley Melvin.

May Sir Knight Kenneth Wayne Melvin's memory be a blessing to all who knew him. His life stands as a beacon of faithfulness, service, and love-a legacy that will endure for generations to come.

The Service will be held on Tuesday September 16, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St Jude Catholic Church 7171 Glenridge Dr Sandy Springs GA 30328

Kin was truly a "servant of servants"...always kind and a good listener...He will be missed, but, he "fought the good fight" and is now into "the rest of the story". We pray that others come to serve the community as Kin did. Sincerely, Marilyn P. Anderson
