Kenneth Peak Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 12, 2023.
Kenneth "Kenny" David Peak of Philadelphia, PA, born on November 8, 1960, passed away peacefully on October 30, 2023 at the age of 62. He has gone home to join his loving husband Fernando "Nelo" Vicente, his mother Virginia Bell, and brothers Dennis and Lester Peak, all of whom preceded him in death.

Kenny is survived by his father James Bell; sister Trina Bell and brother Martin Peak. He has many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, godchildren, a host of cousins, in-laws, extended family, devoted friends, students, and his entire church family.

Kenny was a student at Transfiguration and Our Lady of Victory elementary schools. He was a graduate of West Catholic School for Boys and Gwynedd Mercy University.

A pillar in the Philadelphia area, Kenny dedicated more than 40 years to the Philadelphia Archdiocese Parochial School System, where he taught Elementary Education. Kenny participated in many community theaters and spent much of his time encouraging people to join. There is a large congregation of people who were impacted by this loving and kind soul, all of whom he truly loved with a passion. Not a day went by that Kenny wasn't thinking about ways to get more people involved in the church, its choirs, or in a musical production.

Most people grew to know Kenny because he taught them in school, led them to become involved in a choir, or encouraged them to sing, dance, act, or work behind the scenes in one of the many musicals or school performances that he directed.

Among his many gifts, Kenny Peak was a dedicated teacher, pianist, choir director, producer, director, and choreographer, singer, dancer, and actor. He was also a passionate dog lover, karate expert, cooking aficionado and roller derby athlete. Kenny started his own theater company, The Rainbow Players, devoting hours to assembling his vision of each play. There was nothing he couldn't do, and everything he did, he did wholeheartedly. If the smallest thing intrigued him, he would begin to perfect it, and dedicate his entire being to ensure he did it accurately before instructing anyone else. Somehow, Kenny convinced so many to join the Rainbow Players - even those who initially resisted vehemently. His love and dedication to community involvement was boundless.

Kenny was the spark that lit a fire in so many lives that shall forever remain burning. Even though his light is gone, he will continue to be a shining beacon of love, hope, tolerance and acceptance forever.

For just short of 63 years, Kenny gathered so many to his heart, and those people always returned the favor. No one has ever looked back and regretted knowing him. He will be forever missed.

One of Kenny's absolute favorite plays to direct and perform was Godspell. A final note is a Beatitude that is fitting for everyone to remember.

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

I first met Ken as a freshman at West Catholic Boys. We became good friends then and remained that way for years. When I was in my early 20's we ran into each other on South St in Philly. He told me about doing JC Super Star to benefit a school. I was already performing in clubs in various original bands and hadn't ever tried acting let alone dancing on stage. Kenny talked me into it and I have to say it was one of the exhilarating times in my life. Don't mourn for Ken, sing and dance joyfully because I know he is up in Heaven directing the angels is some wild idea of a play he has. God was well please with Ken. He is resting peacefully.

Hi, If anyone has a copy of the JCSS play and can share it with me I want to show my kids, the amazing performance of Kenny and Fernando. I got together with Kenny a few years ago. We talked about him bringing the tape to watch the play with my family, but we never did. Kenny, you are always going to be part of us.

Summer 1985, I was a camper at Camp Cora and they hired this new drama / theater counselor.... It was Ken. I was so swept up by his infectious enthusiasm that drama became one my favorite parts of Camp Cora. He directed the summer play Jesus Christ Superstar and taught me how to play most of that soundtrack on the piano......he was awesome! RIP Ken...

Brother Kenny was my piano teacher when I went to Our Lady of Hope! I attended the school from k-5 and was a member of the choir. Brother Ken was such a strong figure in my early school memories. He was passionate and expected excellence no matter our age. I´m 27 now and running the Broad Street Run. It will be my first race and the first time I return back to Our Lady of Hope for a service since I was 10. My mind immediately went to Brother Ken and his dogs! I´m saddened to know that I just missed potentially reconnecting with him but I am sending love to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing, loving, and experiencing his light. I´ll hold his spirit in mind throughout my race.

Kenny asked me to be Mary Magdalene in JCSS play. I didn't know much English at the time, but he has faith in me. We have an amazing time performing together.

Kenny I love you. You were one of the first people to bring me out of my shell after my dad passed. Threw me to the wolves for a JCSS play. And all you said was "you have your dad's genes. You'll make it"

I have so many fond memories of my times together with Kenny in Willow Manor Players´ productions! (He always loved seeing me in a nun´s habit... even if it was for 1 crossover from stage left to stage right!)

May Kenny be received into the bosom of Abraham; may he dwell among the Saints; and may his memory be eternal.

Kenny, you sucked me into becoming a Rainbow Player 40 years ago, and I have never looked back. You, more importantly, became my friend, confident, partner in crime, and, a sounding board when I needed one. I know you are in heaven causing a ruckus and have already started gathering those who went before us to get a new show together. You were so excited to start watching old shows and put them on DVD that I can't believe you are gone. I love and miss you my friend. Rest in peace. You will always and forever be in our hearts. Kenny, totally will miss you. As a "Mom's driver" for the children in the Choir, "Ambassadors for Christ" and also the Rainbow Player we traveled quite of bit over Philadelphia. Still have the programs from Sarafina and a video. I know you and Fernando are misbehaving in heaven. Rest in Peace. Barbara Jones and Ashley Moses
