KENNETH ELBERT ZIMMERMAN , born in Coleman, Texas, June 18, 1913, passed away December 17, 2008. Mr. Zimmerman was a graduate of Texas A&M University in 1934 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He was a consulting engineer with the firm of Walter P. Moore and Associates, Inc. from 1946 to his retirement in 1982. During his tenure he was the structural engineer of record for the Houston Astrodome, Jesse H. Jones Hall, Rice Stadium, The Warwick Hotel and many more prestigious sites in Houston, Texas. He was a registered engineer and architect in Texas and a registered engineer in the states of Indiana, Virginia and South Carolina. He served with the Corps of Engineers in Army service from November 1941 to February 1946. From May 1943 his army service was with the Manhattan Engineering District at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he met his wife, Alma, to whom he was happily married since May 1946. Mr. Zimmerman was a member of Rotary Club of Houston, life member of the Houston Engineering and Scientific Society, member of the American Concrete Institute, American Institute of Steel Construction, Consulting Engineers Council of Texas and Texas Society of Professional Engineers. He is a member of Holland Lodge #1, A.F. and A.M., The Scottish Rite, The York Rite, and Arabia Temple. He was also a member and past president of the Houston TurnVerein. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Zimmerman and his daughter Sue Womack. Survivors include his daughter, Molly and son-in-law Bobby Harris of Katy, Texas; Son-in-law Fred Womack and his wife Jennifer of Kerrville; granddaughters Sherry Crawford and husband John of Houston, Texas; and Terry Till and husband Paul of Sugar Land, Texas; grandsons Dr. Kenneth Womack and wife Jeanine of Altoona, PA; Andrew Womack and wife Melissa of Austin, Texas; great grandsons Kyle Crawford, Keith Crawford, Brian Till, Cooper Till and Zach Till. Services will take place at Forest Park Lawndale Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at 10:00 am. Visitation will be 9:00 to 10:00 am on the 23rd. Graveside services to follow, weather permitting. Officiating will be Reverend Jim Barclift. Pallbearers include: Bobby Harris, Fred Womack, John Crawford, Paul Till, Ron Pesek, and Dave Bennett. In 2006 a Scholarship in Structural Engineering was established in Mr. Zimmerman's name at Texas A&M University. In lieu of flowers friends may contribute to the Kenneth E. Zimmerman 34 Scholarship in Structural Engineering Fund at Texas A&M University, School of Engineering. Dear Molly, What a life Ken had. So very interesting to hear about his early life before Walter P. Moore & Associates. Glad to have reminder of part he had in developing Houston and its special structures.

As a General Contractor I had many dealings with Ken. He was always fair, a gentleman and bent over backward to seek easy solutions to difficult problems. He was widely respected in the construction industry.
