Kenny Dale Irwin Jr., 30, Cornelius, North Carolina, born August 5, 1969 in Indianapolis died Friday, July 7, 2000 in Loudon, New Hampshire at the New Hampshire International Speedway. He had been in racing for 25 years, starting at the age of 5 with quarter-midgets, race cars that spin around tracks at 40 mph. He had raced in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for nearly a year. Most recently he was a NASCAR Winston Cup Driver for SABCO Racing, Inc. He was the 1993 USAC Stoop Freightliner Sprint Car Series Rookie of the year, 1993 NAMARS Midget Champion, 1994 USAC Silver Crown Champion Series Rookie of the year, 1996 Skoal National Midget Series Champion, 1997 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Rookie of the year, 1998 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the year. He was a 1988 graduate of Lawrence High School. Memorial contributions may be made to Riley's Hospital for Children. Services: 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, July 12 in Abundant Life Memorial Assembly of God, with calling there from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 11. Burial: Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, Fishers, Indiana. Survivors: Parents: Kenny Dale Sr. and Reva J. (Wray) Irwin; sisters Kim Graziano, Kelly Franks, Korrie Irwin. Additional survivors: grandmother and step grandfather Martha (Hicks) Quimby and Al Quimby; girlfriend Jill Gregory; 2 nephews Markie and Scott Graziano; a niece Lacey Graziano. You were just days away from becoming the driver you yearned to become. New Hampshire would have been your first Cup victory. All of the drivers were saying yours was the car to beat at the New Hampshire practice.
I guess it just wasn´t meant to be.
