Kevin Conway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2016.

Kevin Patrick Conway, 59, of Brooksville, Fla., and formerly of Erie, Pa., passed away Sunday, June 26, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Erie on February 10, 1957, the son of the late George P. and Audrey Steinfurth Conway.

Kevin graduated from Mercyhurst Prep in 1975 and earned a bachelor's degree in professional writing from Gannon University in 1979.

His career as a newspaper reporter and editor began in St. Robert, Mo., and included positions in Bradford, Punxsutawney, and Uniontown, Pa.; Hollywood, West Palm Beach, and Stuart, Fla., and Hilton Head, S.C.

Kevin was a dedicated college football and Tampa Bay Rays fan, a reader, and a gardener; and he enjoyed music, history, politics, and classic comedy.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Richard M. Conway.

Kevin is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Whitney-Conway, whom he married July 5, 1985. He is further survived by his daughters, Maia Appleby and Stephanie Soplop; his grandchildren, Cody Gunton, Serena Soplop, and Taryn Appleby; his sister, Georgia Johnson; his sister-in-law, Micky Conway; and his nieces and nephews.

My sincere sympathy to Kevin's family. I loved that guy and am sure I would never have made it without him. Kevin, you made me laugh; often to point of pepsi coming out of nose; every time we were together. Goodbye to my old and best friend.

I worked with Kevin at the Hollywood Sun-Tattler. The newsroom wasn't big, but it was full of bright, energetic people like Kevin. He helped that little newspaper stand up against the giants on either side of it -- and he had a lot of fun doing it.

I worked with Kevin at The Holywood (FL) Sun-Tattler for only a relatively short portion of his journalism career, but I considered him a lifelong friend.
Over the years, Kevin's calming approach to life has been a direct, steady influence to me -- and, I'm sure, to many others who were fortunate to have known Kevin.
Peace, condolences and loving memories to Nancy and all of Kevin's family and many friends.

My deepest sympathy to Kevin's family. I will always remember his kind heart and wonderful sense of humor, especially his 'top of the morning to you lass' when he picked me up for our senior year at MPS. It made for a perfect start to my day.

I was lucky enough to work with Kevin on the Gannon University newspaper. He was a good friend and an all-around great guy to have in the office - talented, smart, funny, and dependable - which in a student-run newspaper (or any work setting) really counts for something. Today I remember Kevin with fondness and send my deepest condolences to his family. My sympathies also go out to his sister Georgia, who was so kind to me in my student teaching days at the old Academy High School.

Had a great time with Kevin having beer and grouper sandwiches at the Boynton Beach inlet and going to the West Palm beach greyhound track. He was an old friend from Mercyhurst Prep and a talented newspaper man. To Nancy and his family, my deepest condolences and prayers are with you at this difficult time.
