Kevin Dyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 6, 2016.
Kevin Patrick Dyer, DC area resident for 25 years, passed away unexpectedly at his home on June 4, 2016. Kevin was born on October 31, 1964 and grew up in Tolland, CT, the youngest of four children born to Ronald and Ursula Dyer.

A 1982 graduate of Tolland High School, Kevin entered the United States Air Force where he studied computer science. While in the Air Force he met his future wife, Gaye Safford, the love of his life and best friend for thirty-two years.

After serving in the Air Force, Kevin built a distinguished career in the intelligence community as a software engineer, spanning three decades. Highly regarded amongst his peers and clients, he was the recipient of numerous awards and commendations and his dedication, tenacity, acuity of vision and trustworthiness were well-known. At the time of his death he was employed by Northrup Grumman.

In his private life Kevin loved sports, particularly basketball and baseball, regaling his family with humorous play by play texts about his beloved Nationals and the Boston Red Sox. He loved animals and with his wife Gaye rescued many cats over the years providing a nurturing home and hilarious tales of their exploits. He enjoyed all types of music and was particularly partial to Ted Nugent and Blue Oyster Cult. Bearing the name, Kevin Patrick, ensured his embrace of all things Irish including his Halloween birthday which he enthusiastically celebrated by handing out bagsful of candy to the children of his Capitol Hill neighborhood. Friends and family knew well the quick wit and wickedly irreverent sense of humor behind his quiet exterior, released with perfect timing. He was an avid and talented craftsman with the ability to build or fix just about anything and at the time of his death was happily engaged in his workshop in the midst of another project.

Devoted husband, son, brother, uncle and friend, Kevin is survived by his wife, Gaye of Washington DC ; mother, Ursula Dyer of Plainville, MA; sisters Alison Dyer of Vienna, VA; Lori Cooper of Prospect, KY, brother Jim Dyer of Norfolk, MA; mother and father-in-law, Carole and Andy Andersen of Omaha, NE; sisters-in-law, Jenny Dyer of Norfolk, MA and Kelly Dinoff of Omaha, NE; brothers-in-law Bob Smith of Vienna VA, Bill Cooper of Prospect, KY and Brandt Safford of Omaha, NE; nine nieces and nephews; a large, extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins and close friends, Doug Massey of Annapolis, MD and Lance Mehle of Kapolei, HI. He is preceded in death by his father, Ronald Dyer.

Kevin's life will be celebrated privately; in lieu of flowers those wishing to make a memorial donation in his name are asked to consider the 4Paws Rescue Team, P.O. Box 2908, Merrifield, VA 22116, Attn: Barbara Lipson or online at www.FourPaws.org. Condolences may be sent to Gaye Dyer, 114-10th St. SE, Washington, DC 20003 or please visit the online guest book at www.demainefuneralhomes.com. As Kevin would say, "GO NATS!"

Dear Gaye, I am heartbroken. I lost my best friend in the world. Kevin, Doug, Chad, Shawn and I traveled the world working on impossible tasks. We developed a bond unlike any I will ever have again. I am going to miss Kevin's quick wit, the funny faces, those glances, his energy and how smart he was. We could go for months without talking and when we were able to get a hold of one another we could pick up right were we left off. We used to joke about being at the old folks home in our rockers laughing uncontrollably while thinking of all the funny things that we have done over the years - I won't have anybody to sit with now.... I miss him so much. I thank you for including me in his obituary, it was a true honor. I am heartbroken for you too Gaye. I know how much he meant to you. Thankfully he was such a character that he has left us with more memories than we will ever be able to remember. Mt thoughts and prayers are with you as you navigate your future. Know that Kathey and I will always be beside you.

Gaye, you do not know me but I am a childhood friend of Kevin. I am sorry to hear about your loss. It doesn't surprise me that he loved woodworking since that was his father's passion also. I attended many Blue Oyster Cult concerts with Kevin. Looking at his picture he looks just like he did right out of high school. I am so sorry for your loss.

What a beautiful tribute to a wonderful man! What an extraordinary life!!!! I am one of the privileged who was friends with Kevin through his best friend and love Gaye. He always always always made me laugh. He teased relentlessly but always with a heart of gold underneath. I like to think of him comfy on his couch watching sports,,eating chocolate cake, and I had the amazing good fortune to celebrate many a fantastic Halloween birthday night with Kevin and his always loving and welcoming family! I am heartbroken for you Gaye, Ursula, Alison, and all of the family. I love you all very much and thank you for always including me in your family celebrations and life. To Kevin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
