Kim GENEREUX Obituary

Published by Victoria Times Colonist from Sep. 4 to Sep. 6, 2013.
1961-2013

Peacefully, after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by loving family, on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at the age of 52, Kim left us to join his father, Norman Genereux, brother, Guy Genereux, and grandmother, Albertina (Mimi) Ciofiani for his next great adventure.

Kim is survived by his mother Doreen Genereux (nee Davies); brother and sister Todd and Angel; partner Patty Smyth, and her daughters Rachel and Kyla; aunt Leslie Hebenton; friend and former partner Melissa Bell; nieces Katie and Tory; nephews Damien and Jesse; and numerous cousins. He will be greatly missed by his many family, friends, colleagues and clients.

Born May 15, 1961, in Banff, AB, Kim graduated from Banff Composite High School in 1979 and ventured on to become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor and work in Grand Cayman. He attended the University of Victoria, and in 1989, graduated with Honours from the Laboratory Technology/Electron Microscopy (EM) program at Seneca College in Toronto. Kim worked in diagnostic and basic research at Dalhousie University, the University of Toronto, and UBC, and was Supervisor of Diagnostic EM, Department of Pathology, King Fahad National Guard Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Pursuing an interest in the financial markets, Kim completed the Canadian Securities Course and formally became an Investment Advisor in 2000, enjoying a 13 year career in Victoria, BC. Within the community, Kim volunteered as a member of the Board of Directors for the Help Fill a Dream Foundation and co-founded the Rink of Dreams charity event.

Kim had a passion for scuba diving, joyfully experiencing more than 1,000 dives all over the world. He earned national and international awards for his underwater photography and authored several magazine and newspaper articles on the subject of marine life. As an all-seasoned athlete and lover of the outdoors he enjoyed hockey, hiking, boating in his Zodiac, and ultra-long-distance cycling on his prized red Cervélo, proud to have accomplished a one-day solo ride of 294 km from Jasper to Banff.

Kim embraced life. Every sentence, every word, every syllable punctuated with an exclamation mark. Kim loved to tell a good story, of which he had many. He will be remembered most for his big heart, infectious grin, keen sense of humour, eagerness for travel, adventure and challenge, and deep love and respect for the ocean and all its creatures large and small. Kim followed his dreams and made life happen; he is an inspiration to us all.

A heartfelt thank you to all who cared for Kim at the BC Cancer Agency and Palliative Care Unit at Saanich Peninsula Hospital.

Friends are welcome to join in a celebration of Kim's life to be held at Oddfellows Lodge, 1315 Douglas Street (near Yates), Victoria, BC, on Thursday, September 5th, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In the spirit of Kim's advocacy for healthy oceans and marine conservation, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marine Conservation Institute http://www.marine-conservation.org/

I am so sad to hear that Kim has passed away. We had lost touch a few years ago; I hadn't even heard that he'd been ill.

I have great memories of Kim from Riyadh. The last time I saw him, we spent a fun-filled weekend with him and a group of our Saudi friends in Victoria and Vancouver for a reunion where Kim was the ringleader of great hijinks. He was such a funny, interesting, and kind person.

Doreen, Leslie and all the family,my heart has sunk, …and am truly so sad hearing this news, and a huge regret of missing his celebration of life, of which Kim did so well.
He touched this world, and those he encountered, on this earth and in the sea, in a deeper way than most. Kim enlightened and inspired us all to live life to the fullest. His passion for music and meaning that went along with all the words, he felt with importance and equivalence to his desire to be part of the world underneath the ocean's edge. His huge heart and cheeky grin with humorous and feisty ways connected us and the memories will always lie in our hearts. From his amazing endurance and love of cycling, and his constant adrenalin for scuba diving alone at night and his photography that reflected all he was and his creative side, which he shared through his masked eyes, will encourages us till eternity. My thoughts are with you Doreen, you were his number one lady, always!! He loved you and you were his best friend. Big hugs to everyone who had the privilege of sharing time with Kim, all that he is, will blossom in your hearts in his “way too soon” absence.

Patty. I am so sorry to hear about Kim. I knew him professionally for years and his sense of humour always left me smiling. We had many a bizarre conversation that followed a variety of tangents. He had such an amazing energy about him and I can only imagine the void that has been left.
