Kimberly Murphy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 27, 2023.
With heavy hearts, we share the news of Kimberly Ann Murphy's passing on October 25, 2023, in Los Angeles at age 44. Preceded in death by her father, Mark Murphy, in September of 2022, Kim's absence leaves a profound emptiness. She leaves behind a loving family, including her mother, Susan Hoylman Murphy Hullett, her sons Ziggy (16) and Rex (14), and her husband, Asa Hardman. Her twin brother, Scott, and younger brother, Kevin, along with his wife, Heather and nephews, Benjamin (8) and James (5), feel this loss deeply. Kim's life was filled with love from her extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws, and countless friends.

Born on February 11, 1979, on a frosty Chicago night, just minutes before brother Scott, Kim grew up in Park Forest attending Talala Elementary and Crete-Monee High School before graduating from Rock Island High School. She pursued her love for learning at Drake University in Des Moines, majoring in Computer Science and Math, with a minor in Physics, and later earned a Master's in Computer Science from USC. Competitive and determined, Kim ran track and cross country in high school, played rugby while at Drake, and found her zen doing yoga. Her career spanned several impressive roles, including positions at NAVAIR in California, The Center for Disease Analysis in Colorado, and, most recently, the IRS in Los Angeles.

Kim's brilliance was matched by her creative spirit. A dedicated environmentalist and a vegetarian (sometimes vegan) since age 8, she could do wonders with only simple veggies and tofu. She was intensely opinionated and a fierce debater who could be as flexible as a steel beam but with the conviction of a saint. An adventurer at heart, Kim had traveled the world, exploring every continent except Antarctica. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife and mother, bursting with pride at her sons' accomplishments and maturity.

Kim's legacy is a blend of warmth, intelligence, and a deep sense of connection to the world and people around her. Her absence will be profoundly felt by all who knew her.

To honor Kim, donations can be made to The National Alliance on Mental Illness or Mental Health America.

A Celebration of Life is planned in the Chicagoland area to honor Kim's memory. For further information, please contact:
