Kon Tai Wong Lin

Kon Tai Wong Lin (October 30, 1910 – March 31, 2015)
Kon Tai was the elder child born to the Chow family of four in a small village in Southern China near Quangzhou. She married Fook Lin Wong at age 16 and became a mom at 17. Her husband came to America while she lived in the Wong ancestral home with her parents-in-law and the younger brother-in-law's family. Kon Tai was the primary care giver for the extended family as her younger brother-in-law's wife was sickly. Her nephew, Steven Wong, has fond memories and appreciation for her care during his childhood years.
Kon Tai was an independent and self-sufficient woman. She saved enough money from the living allowance her husband sent home from America to purchase her own farm land. She was always proud of how productive the land was. She would later use her farming skill in her home garden in America. During the late 1930's and early 1940's, bandits and invading Japanese soldiers were roaming in the villages, she was reputed to have protected her home and farm land with a Winchester rifle. This story is plausible and supported by stories told by the nursing home staff of her waving her walking cane in pursuing her needs or protecting her personal property.
After her daughter, Pat Faye, was married in 1947, she continued to live in China until the Communist took over. She immigrated to Hong Kong in the 1950's and helped her daughter caring for her children. Her daughter immigrated to Texas in 1960 and she joined her husband in New York City in 1965. She and her husband moved to Houston in 1968. After her husband's passing in 1970, she lived in her daughter's household for the next four decades. She tirelessly cared for her grandchildren with much love and devotion while her daughter tended to the liquor business with her husband. Kon Tai also extended the same love and devotion to her great-grandchildren.
Kon Tai Wong Lin is survived by daughter, Pat Faye Gin; grandchildren: Marilyn Chee (husband Herbert), Herbert Gin and Herman Gin (wife Nancy); great grandchildren: Bryan Chee (wife Jennifer), Jen Penrod (husband Ryan) and Tyler Gin; great-great grandchildren: William Chee, Maya Penrod and Kai Penrod; nephew son, Wong Lin Foo (wife Lai Kuen); and nephew grandsons: Wong Ka Fai and Wong Ka Wing.
