DR. KOPPOLU P. SARMA

Dr. Koppolu P. Sarma CROWN POINT, IN - It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, doctor, and friend, Dr. Koppolu Sarma. Dr. Sarma passed suddenly on October 2, 2018 and his loss will be felt by all who were privileged to know him. His contributions to our community are unparalleled and will benefit generations to come. Dr. Koppolu P. Sarma came to the U.S. after he trained in Hyderabad, India in 1972. They initially settled in New York but then moved to Chicago and finally settled in Northwest Indiana. For the last 38 years, Dr. Sarma has been practicing Radiation Oncology in Northwest Indiana, a place that he now calls home. Dr. Sarma pioneered radiation oncology programs at both Saint Mary Medical Center and Porter Memorial hospital. Along with his many leadership positions in the medical community, Dr. Sarma has always made time for his friends and family. Dr. Sarma, a founding member of the Indian Medical Association, eventually served as the organization's third President in 1983. Together with his wife, Shakuntala, and the close-knit NW Indiana Indian community, Dr. Sarma played a pivotal role in executing the construction of the Bharatiya Temple of Northwest Indiana, which opened its doors in 2010. Dr. Sarmais survived by his wife, Shakuntala, and their three children Chandrika (Michael Farrell), Himagiri, and Havishakrishna (Anuja). He will also be missed by his dear grandchildren Kieran, Maya, and Laila. There will be a visitation at BURNS FUNERAL HOME, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN on Friday, October 5, 2018 from 3:00-6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests donations to the Indian American Cultural Center or NWIHRC.
