**Kris Samuel Pechet**

*November 17, 1954 – September 1, 2025*

At 9:06 a.m. on Monday, September 1, 2025, the final whistle blew for Kris in Vancouver, BC. No overtime, no fanfare-just an overwhelming sadness felt by his fans. Husband, father, zeide, lawyer, and coach, Kris fought hard for everything and everyone he believed in. With his beloved wife Blue and son Ahren by his side, and despite the tireless efforts of the medical and nursing staff at Vancouver General Hospital's CICU and CSICU, he lost his final battle following two heart surgeries.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Orla and Torchy Pechet, Kris' family relocated to North Vancouver, BC in 1968. It was there that his life truly blossomed, beginning in grade nine at Balmoral Junior Secondary and continuing at Delbrook High. Kris' passion for all sports was equally matched by that for academics and Kris loved High School, taking part in all it had to offer. He maintained a close-knit group of friends from those days, including his closest lifetime friend, Bruce Bourdon.

Kris worked at the Hastings Racetrack and Pacific Press in support of his post-secondary education earning a History Degree in 1978 from SFU and a Law Degree in 1981 from the University of Victoria. Kris had a great experience at Law School, making lifelong friends and graduating in the fourth class of UVic's fledgling Law School – in fact, heading up his list of the best days of his life was graduation from law school. He then began a career with the Crown, first in Dawson Creek, where he met longtime friend, associate, and lawyer Mark McDonald. Mark played an important part in Kris' move to private practice in 1987 and then from criminal law to civil law late in his career. After leaving the Crown, Kris was frequently appointed as a Special Prosecutor throughout the Province and conducted many significant cases, not only for the Crown but also for the Defense until his retirement in May 2024.

Kris was an excellent lawyer and a friend to everyone with whom he worked known for his precise vocabulary, impeccable timing, and compelling arguments, Kris was widely respected as an exceptional lawyer-admired equally by colleagues on both sides of the courtroom.

Kris carried the same passion and competitiveness he had for Law to the football field and growing up in Winnipeg made Kris a life-long Green Bay Packers fan. His earliest foray into coaching came at the age of 8 when he wrote Vince Lombardi, then Green Bay head coach, with suggested plays. The team kindly wrote back and thanked Kris with a box full of Green Bay merchandise but did not respond to his request to send two players to spend the summer with him in Winnipeg despite his assurance that his parents had agreed to host them at their home.

Kris first coached nine-year-old Ahren at North Delta Community Football before co-founding the Seaquam High School football program in 1994. He later helped revive the Vancouver Trojans junior football team, guiding them from back-to-back winless seasons to a playoff berth in 2005. Returning to Seaquam as head coach, he led the team to victory in the BC High School Championship in 2008. His commitment to football extended beyond wins and losses, serving on the BC Secondary School Football Association Executive with a deep dedication to player safety and development.

Kris played hockey and tennis into his thirties, basketball into his forties, softball into his sixties-and honed his golf game throughout, at Richmond Country Club.

His love for learning never waned and he immersed himself in the study of languages and intellectual pursuits through reading and The Great Courses series.

Kris loved fiercely and wore his heart openly, his face lighting up with affection when someone he cared about walked into the room. In law, sports, friendship and love, to have Kris in your corner meant you would feel like nothing had been left on the table – win or lose.

Kris loved his Icelandic cousins along with his aunt June and uncle Harrill but most strongly identified with his Jewish heritage, maintaining close ties with his Pechet cousins and uncles Mitch and Morrie-frequently visiting them and participating in family celebrations.

In contrast to his intensity in Court and on the field, Kris' compassion was evident by his deep love of dogs and his quiet love for art, the natural world, flowers, skies, sunsets, and every wild thing. He noticed what others overlooked.

Kris loved to travel and this began when his aunt June took him to Europe in 1970 and then in 1974, he participated in Comex #6, a goodwill mission where 200 participants from the Commonwealth met in Chigwell UK and received instruction on essential skills such as bus driving, meal preparation, and vehicle maintenance. A convoy of ten buses then embarked on the adventure, traversing Europe through Iraq, Iran, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan then returning to the UK.

On a subsequent trip Kris travelled through Europe and Israel picking melons on a kibbutz where he declared he would spend the rest of his life until his parents arrived and convinced him to come home and finish university. In later travels with Blue, Kris enjoyed cruises with his parents, Hawaiian and Mexican vacations, golf trips, annual tagalongs with Blue to London which were followed by family vacations in Europe and spending winters in Palm Springs before and after his retirement.

Kris leaves behind his beloved wife Blue; son Ahren (Eryn); grandchildren Hayden and Ava; brother Bill; sister Kim; lifelong friend Bruce Bourden (Beth and Kate).

Kris would have been touched and grateful for Ahren, Eryn, Bruce, Beth, Kate, Jodi Cristall, Nicole Gill and Gordon Bowen who sat with and supported Blue at VGH during Kris' extended second surgery.

A celebration of Kris' life will be held on Thursday, October 16th at 1:00 p.m. at the Richmond Country Club, 9100 Steveston Highway, Richmond BC.

Kris has been a family friend of ours my entire life. When I was younger, I knew him as my dad's friend who coached football and occasionally came to my hockey and lacrosse games. Like countless other young men, Kris as a role model to me.

As I got older, I started to get invited to Kris and dad's impromptu but regular lunches and coffees. I felt like a kid getting invited to the grown up table and always appreciated getting to listen to their lively debates and discussions.

Kris was a true intellectual. He had a wealth of knowledge on topics from history, philosophy, politics to sports. I always learned something every time I spoke with him.

He was also a truly compassionate man. After my father passed away, Kris was the first person to reach out to me and provide any help he could to our family.

Condolences to Blue, Ahren and to all those who knew and loved Kris.

What a handsome photograph of Kris, a really nice one by which to remember him. Kris was a valued colleague and a good friend of mine for over 40 years. He was with me at the start of my career with the Crown at the Port Coquitlam office in 1983 and he was there for my sendoff retirement party in June 2024. We went river rafting and played baseball together. We had many enjoyable lunches together during our early years with Frances Gordon and Pedro De Couto. We had many lively legal and philosophical discussions and we shared many laughs over our court cases. When Kris went into private practice, he was my first choice to send friends and families to for consultation. In the last few years of our practices, we consulted with each other on difficult legal issues and we shared highlights of our personal life, usually involving our sports, our spouses and love of dogs. He was immensely proud of Blue and Ahren. Kris was so sweet and kind and was like an older brother to me. He would usually call me and invite me to coffee or lunch, usually at the Spaghetti Factory. He loved the baked goods at coffee. We would end our monthly get together with a hug and a smile. I will really miss my dear friend Kris. Sending loving thoughts and condolences to Blue, Ahren and Kris´ extended family. Wendy Dawson

I was fortunate to get to know Kris well during our high school years as we worked closely - from planning graduation fundraisers and celebrations to screen-printing hundreds of decorative posters late into the night to meet our deadlines.

We were a lucky bunch, that Class of ´72. We built friendships that carried us through the decades - bonds that have lasted a lifetime and beyond.

Kris was always solid, dependable, considerate, and empathetic - hardworking, yet quick to share a laugh. He will always be remembered for those qualities, as well as for his brilliant mind, unwavering moral compass, and deep love and devotion to his wife, Blue, and their family.

I´m so sorry to be missing Kris´s service. I´m in Ontario dealing with a family emergency, but I´ll be with you all in spirit.

Kris, rest in peace. Till we meet again.

I had the pleasure of working for Kris for 14 years. What I remember most was his mode for dictation - he hand wrote everything. Be it a few lines or pages and pages. The other thing I remember is that he had a brilliant mind!

My sincere condolences to Blue, and all of Kris´ family and friends.

I will miss Kris so much. There are no words to convey my condolences to Blue and Ahren on behalf of our whole family. Kris has been a buddy since 1978 at UVic law school and in more recent years we enjoyed weekends in Seattle with Kris and Blue watching the Toronto Blue Jays play the Mariners. I have so many memories of that kind, jovial, funny, smart man. He will always be in my heart. Barbara Fisher (and Mark, Emily, Ben and Tedi). Xoxo

I have known Kris since we were teenagers. A bunch of us, including Kris, were great friends throughout these years into early adulthood. While I moved from Vancouver many years ago, I have such fond memories of these times, and remember how Orla and Torchy would welcome all of us crazy kids into their home for various get-togethers. Even then, Kris was one-of-a-kind. He was intelligent, uniquely perceptive and honest, and trustworthy. He was also very open and accepting of others, and would respect what others had to say. It is not at all surprising that these personal attributes stood him in good stead in his work as a lawyer. He will be deeply missed, and I send my sincerest condolences to his family and friends. RIP Kris.

Dear Blue and Ahren: I knew Kris to be a fine lawyer whom I consider to be one of my best mentors when I was a young lawyer. I also had the pleasure to witness his athleticism and competitive spirit when we played softball together. We even played at Nat Bailey in the championship. He was our team´s leader but he was at his best after the game discussing sports, politics and philosophy over beers.

My sincere condolences on your loss.

Kris has been on my mind and in my heart since the news of his hospitalization. Somehow, it felt like this powerhouse of bright human spirit and energy would forge through the obstacles in his field and claim victory over his challenges. Sadly, his touchdown was his send-off. Blue, Ahren and all those deeply affected by the loss in their lives of the buoyant being that was Kris, my heart goes out to you. He was like a big puppy who showered us with affection and stories, enthusiasm and interest. He´s left his warmth and kindness in our hearts and I will hold close that feeling that is Kris´s essence, as we navigate a world without Kris in it. Deep love and compassion to his friends and family. We love you Kris.

I feel so incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend time with Kris and Blue in Palm Springs. Kris and I engaged in lively political conversations, watched educational tv and some really good Netflix series, as Blue quietly slept on the couch. I have great memories of sitting in the sun and chatting with Kris, he was a wonderful caring, interesting, engaging person and he will be missed. May his memory always be a blessing.

Hi Blue,

I´ve been reflecting on our lifelong friendship, one that´s spanned many years and was only ever separated by distance.

Despite that, our connection remained strong, and through our many conversations, I came to know Kris - not directly, but through the many stories you shared so often and so fondly.

Though I didn´t have the chance to know Kris as well as I would have liked, I always felt the depth of your bond through your words. It was clear to me that your life together was something very special - a partnership built on love, laughter, and mutual respect.

His passing feels heartbreakingly premature, and I can only imagine the weight of your loss.

Please know that I´m holding you in my thoughts, and that his memory - and the love you shared - continues to resonate deeply with those of us who were lucky enough to be a part of your love story.

With heartfelt sympathy,

Gary (and Earl)

Blue, my deepest condolences to you and family at this time.

Kris and I worked together at the crown office. We had many trials together and many many good times too, in and out of the courtroom. He always had many good stories to tell. I particularly loved the one about him getting a hole in one while playing golf and the diamond he won as a result.
Love to you Blue and the family ( sorry but I won´t be able to make the service)
