Kyle Berceau Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2024.
Kyle Steven Berceau passed away on March 5, 2024 at his home in Mepkin Abbey in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, from cancer that developed after a successful liver transplant in December, 2023. Kyle heroically endured 18 years of medical emergencies from autoimmune colon and liver illnesses that compromised his health in numerous ways. He was born on March 16,1990 in Evanston, Illinois.

Kyle went to God surrounded by his loving family, parents Steve and Marilyn, and siblings Brett (Catie) Berceau, Cory (Elise) Berceau, Bri Berceau and Brooke Berceau and his blessed monastery family, Father Joe Tedesco, Father Kevin Welsh and all of his brothers who have meant so much to him. His beloved grandparents, Roman and Rosemary Berceau and Ronald and Betty Anderson preceded him in death.

Kyle graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2012 and went on to work in Minor League Baseball Administration for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Moving back to Chicago in 2021, he attended Mundelein Seminary for the Diocese of Chicago. In September, 2022 he was drawn to contemplative life and entered Mepkin Abbey, a Catholic monastic community.

Brother Kyle professed his Solemn Vows on February 18, 2024 taking the name of Brother Roman Paul after his paternal grandfather. Gifted in writing, his reflections and articles were admired by many. He contributed significantly to monastic life as he embraced Cistercian charism with his profound faith and commitment to monastic ideals.

Second to his faith was his passion for baseball - a natural athlete, but more importantly a gifted coach, adored by his players and their parents alike who saw him as a thoughtful, motivating role model.

Kyle had a gift for faith-based intellectual curiosity and lived his life through his heart - his acts of kindness will be remembered by anyone with whom he came in contact and is an inspiration to us all.

Kyle's funeral and burial was held at the Mepkin Abbey on Thursday, March 7, 2024, and will be followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 am on Saturday, March 16 at Saints Joseph and Francis Xavier Parish, 1747 Lake Avenue, Wilmette, Illinois.

Donations in Brother Roman Paul's name can be made to the Mepkin Abbey, 1098 Mepkin Abbey Road, Moncks Corner, SC 29461.

We were in our Chicago seminarians camp. We went out for a walk as we prayed the most holy rosary. After our prayer we talked about his discernment to join the trappist monastery. I asked him so many questions and he kindly answered all of them. He then wanted to share his excitement of me starting Philosophy at Mundelein Seminary, but I still had more questions for him. After sharing about our new journey, we then talked about our fears. I shared with him I had no car and I was sad thinking I wouldn't be able to visit my family. Without any hesitation, he said "I'll just give you my car, you will need more than I and I want you to be able to visit your family." I responded "hold on Kyle, pray about it." A week later he calls me and says "I'm picking you up tomorrow, the Holy Spirit is telling me to give you my car and we are going to the DMV." I was happy, joyful, thankful and excited. All summer I asked God to help me find a car, and God answered my prayer through Kyle.
Now that he is in heaven, I pray that I may always remember how kind and generous Kyle was to me and so that I may imitate him in his kindness and generosity.

Thank you brother, you will forever be remembered in my heart!
