Kyle Berthoud Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 24, 2025.
Kyle passed away on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025 at the age of 36 after a two-year battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his father, Eric Andre Berthoud, his grandmothers Attilia and Rose, and his grandfather Bruno. He is survived by his mother Ellen, his brothers Kevin and Kent, his half-sister Tia, his niece Cherie, his nephew Donny, his bonus dad Bud, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins in the Philippines.

Kyle was born on March 7, 1989. He spoke fondly of his childhood growing up along the river in Elco PA, where he rode bicycles, climbed trees, and learned chess from his father. Before he even started kindergarten, he took first place in a chess tournament at the University of Pittsburgh. His family later moved to Upper St. Clair where he played on the varsity soccer team and graduated high school in 2007.

Kyle proudly served in the US Navy and made people laugh on every continent and ocean on earth. He was a skilled carpenter and one of the hardest workers on any job. Some of his finest work was done alongside his friend Donny, and when he helped build the Life Building Ministries farm in Cochranton PA.

Kyle was daring, curious, and willing to try anything once. Consequently, he struggled with addiction throughout his life. When he was committed to recovery, he encouraged and served everyone around him. But even in his darkest hours, Kyle wanted to live, and he tried his best to help others.

Kyle loved his family and kept a photo of them close. He was great with children and wanted nothing more than to have kids of his own and give them the kind of childhood he had in Elco.

Kyle was diagnosed with stage four renal cancer in the fall of 2023. He fought bravely and never gave up hope or his sense of humor. He died on a Friday evening at Shadyside Hospital, held by his mother and brother, and surrounded by a dozen beloved friends and mentors. We are grateful his suffering has come to an end. Kyle will continue to help those he loved as we remember his strength and his lust for life.

A viewing will take place on Tuesday, Aug. 26 from 3 to 8 PM at D'Alessandro Funeral Home (4522 Butler St, Pittsburgh, PA 15201). Please come as you are.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 4 PM at St. Peter's Episcopal Church (4048 Brownsville Rd. Pittsburgh, PA 15227). Reception to follow.

Kyle was one of the sweetest, kindest, and brightest kids I have ever known. His energy was contagious, and his dedication. shown through in everything he did. Beyond his accomplishments, what stood out most was his gentle and respectful nature - truly a kind soul who touched the hearts of everyone around him. He will be deeply missed but his memory will live on in the love and warmth he shared. May his beautiful soul rest in eternal peace .

With love and prayers.

I am so sad to hear of Kyle's passing. He is a former student (10th grade) that I have never forgotten. He gave me this painting -- a beautiful image in spite of a tough time -- and I had it in my classroom every single year since 2005. I just retired and brought it home. I have thought of his energy, strength, kindness, and especially HOPE every time I have looked at it. We spoke a few times since high school, and I am heartbroken that we will not get to catch up again. Rest in peace, Kyle, and thank you for shining your light on this world for the time you had.

I am so sorry to hear about Kyle. I will always remember his mischievous spirit and great sense of humor from his time as a student in my art class at USCHS many years ago. Please know you are in my thoughts.

Ellen-

I'll remember Kyle for two things each in the two different stages of life I knew him: in high school, his warmth and joyfulness; and in adulthood, his grit and courage. He'll be remembered with a smile, and when all is said and done, I can't think of any other way to define a life well lived.

"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive. But each one in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ´s at His coming."

Our deepest sympathies,

Andy and Mae Mueller

My condolences to the Berthoud family. I was Kyle´s counselor at Upper St Clair High School. I always found Kyle to be a very personable young man who had a big heart. After reading the obituary, it sounds like Kyle continued to touch a lot of lives after he graduated from high school. My hope is that that knowledge, along with the fact that he is no longer suffering will give you comfort.

Kyle you will be missed! Your hands were blessed so that any skill you tried to learn you quickly caught on to. As a life long journeyman Carpenter I was impressed with your ability to master the skills of the trade quickly. You were taken from us to soon so the good Lord must have needed you elsewhere! I am saddened by your short life.
