Lance Willis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 29, 2025.
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Lance Byron Willis, aged 72, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. Lance passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025, in Seattle, WA, with his family by his side and a stunning view of Mt. Rainer out his window.

Lance was born on August 3rd, 1952, in Richland, Washington, to Lonnie Monroe and Murriel LaVerne Willis, and was the middle of five children. He attended Richland High School, and graduated from Washington State University. Lance met his future wife, Dorian Ann Day, in college and they later married in an intimate ceremony on the beautiful island of Molokai. Their marriage spanned 37 years, during which they had two children: Lauren ('87) and Sam ('93).

Lance's greatest source of pride was being a father. He loved his children, Lauren and Sam, unconditionally. Their happiness, growth, and accomplishments were his greatest joys in life, and he never missed a chance to support, celebrate, or simply be there for them.

Lance's life was marked first and foremost by a deep commitment to his family and friends, followed shortly thereafter by a staunch commitment to humor and practical jokes, which endeared him to those around him (mostly). He was a generous soul with a quick wit and an unmatched sense of comedic timing; he left an impression on everyone he met. His happiest moments were when he was surrounded by family and friends, both near and far, and he was known for capturing all the memories he could through the lens of his camera. He never failed to prioritize time with those he loved, often bringing them together with his signature invitation for "Cocktails & Appetizers" - a phrase that became one of his many trademarks.

Lance was an avid sports fan who cheered for the Washington State Cougars, Seattle Mariners, and Seattle Seahawks (often to his disappointment). He also loved everything about life by the water: whether he was fishing, sailing the Hobie Cat, hunting for oysters, grilling on the deck, or simply relaxing and watching the tide, he felt most at home by the bay and loved sharing it with others. If he wasn't on the water, you'd almost certainly find him on the golf course. Rain or shine, he truly cherished his time on the green with all of his golf buddies.

Lance was one of a kind - genuine, loving, and unforgettable. It was an extraordinary gift to have known him, and his presence was nothing short of a blessing. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Lance is preceded in death by his parents, Lonnie Monroe and Murriel LaVerne Willis, and his eldest brother, Larry Willis.

Lance is survived by his wife, Dorian; his children, Lauren and Sam Willis (Caitlin); his siblings, Lynda Willis, Lonnie Willis (Eileen), and Lisa Cedergren (Brian); and by numerous nephews, nieces, and extended family members, all of whom he deeply loved and treasured.

A Celebration of Life will be held on July 26th at the family home by the bay.

I am so honored to consider Lance a friend. I will keep that in present tense. He truly will live on forever. While him being outside, I think about his antics with the horse. I'm also very proud that I actually was able to prank Lance. One day, I noticed him shopping for veggies at Safeway with his cart a short distance away. I was able to sneak the cart away and hide it. Watching him look for it was quite fulfilling. I'll try to find the photo.
My deepest sympathies to all of you. I know Lance will live on. Hugs~
