Larry Burke Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 23, 2011.
Larry J. Burke died Thursday, June 23, 2011, in an automobile accident. He was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., on May 6, 1929, to Cullen and Doris Burke. He moved to his grandparents’ farm in Albany, Ind., with his mother and brother, Jack, after his parents divorced when Larry was a toddler. His grandparents raised him and his brother after his mother’s untimely death at the age of 29. Despite the pressures of the depression and family tragedies, Larry had many great adventures growing up on the farm and enjoyed showing champion Chester White hogs at the local fair. He graduated at the top of the class from DeSoto High School in 1946. Larry worked his way through Ball State University, graduating with a B.A. in 1951, where he met Elizabeth (Betty) Rosetta Spaulding and began a lifelong romance. They were married in Montpelier, Ind., on July 12, 1952. In 1954, Larry received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School. Upon graduation, he served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 in the Counter Intelligence Corps and was stationed in Würzburg, Germany. After completing his military service, Larry and Betty settled in Fort Wayne, where he began his legal career. He joined the law firm that ultimately became Kennerk, Dumas, Burke, Backs, Salin & Long, and later became a solo practitioner. Among many highlights of his four decades of work as a lawyer, Larry served as the President of the Allen County Bar Association, and chaired the Legal Ethics Committee and the Economics of Practice Committee for the Indiana State Bar Association. He also served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney early in his career and as the Deputy City Attorney during the Armstrong Administration. He worked on civil rights matters throughout his career - a cause he was passionate about throughout his life - working on cases to open the local private golf courses to all and to make government hiring and promotion practices more equitable. Larry and Betty raised their five children in Fort Wayne and were always active and involved in community affairs. Larry served on the board of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation as member and two-time president. He also served on the board of the African American Historical Museum. He and Betty enjoyed the arts, architecture, traveling to the Southwest and sporting events. Larry had a keen intellect, read voraciously, and was a true Renaissance man - he knew so much about so many topics and took courses in yoga, pottery and calligraphy. He was a fine storyteller, had a self-effacing manner and a great sense of humor, and could connect easily with anyone he met. Larry derived great joy from fatherhood and loved being surrounded by his family and friends. He often traveled to visit children, grandchildren and other relatives. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time with the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out), his close friend, Mary Knopp, and his lively golden doodle, Shakespeare. He also remained very active and frequently rode his bike, shot baskets in his drivewayandwalked Shakespeare through Franke Park. His wife, Betty, his son, Kevin, and his brother, Jack, preceded Larry in death. He is survived by his sons, Dennis (Connie) and Tim (Sarah), and his daughters, Nancy (Todd) Nahrwold and Amy (Scott) Kosnoff. He also is survived by his brother, John,sister-in-law Iris andten grandchildren: Dustin (Rebecca), Casie, Colleen (John) Walston, Jamie (Patrick) Eckhold, Claire, Margaret, Kate, Hannah, Cameron and Allison; and many nieces and nephews. His first great-grandchild, Burke Walston, was born in October.Larry was looking forward to meeting his great-granddaughter, expected by Jamie and Pat Eckhold in early August. A memorial service is planned at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 5310 Old Mill Road, Fort Wayne, Ind., on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Church will be open at 9:30 a.m. for guest. A private burial will be held for family at the Godlove-Depoy cemetery in Albany, Ind., near the family farm. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be graciously accepted for the Building Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation or for the African American Historical Museum of Fort Wayne. Arrangements by D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave. To sign the online guest book, go to www.mccombandsons.com.

Dear Family,
Although I grew up in Ft. Wayne, Larry and I first met while serving in the army in Würzburg, Germany. There we spent time talking about our next great steps in life. It was also a time when Betty was pregnant with her first child.
On a visit to my parents in Ft. Wayne after military service, I was told by a good friend, Kenneth Cole, that we might have a mutual acquaintance. Larry and I renewed our friendship, and I tried to see Larry whenever I visited Ft. Wayne. Larry was an exceptional person who had many of those genuine qualities of a true midwesterner which many of us still cherish. How he will be missed!

I remember Mr Burke as a kind and patient man while he mentored young students at Study Elementary in Fort Wayne recently. I consider myself fortunate to have known a man of his stature, and I will always be impressed by his strong character, his keen intellect, his flawless memory, and his giving nature. Let his life be an example for others to follow, he made the world a better place.

Dennis, Tim, Nancy & Amy: I was saddened to hear of the loss of your father last week. Your mom and dad were two of the kindest people I have ever known. From way back when my brother Terry and I were your paper boys and when we hung out in the park / neighborhood, to when I regularly stopped in to chat with your mom while I visited kids at Wood Youth Center, or when I would run onto your dad at the courthouse when I was a young lawyer, and when I would see him in recent years in the neighborhood, your parents were always positive and encouraging. They always spoke of your most recent accomplishments and experiences, and they were very proud of your family. Having recently lost my dad, I know that your loss will in time be tempered with the great memories and life lessons that your father shared with you. God bless you all.

We are amending our previous entry. We met Larry and Betty prior to Jamie's graduation. At the graduation, Larry was alone. He missed Betty terribly.
We know that he meant the world to Dennis, Connie, Casie and Jamie.
We are so very sorry.

Tim and family, You had such kind and heart warming words for me at the passing of my Mother earlier this year and I'll always remember those words and the kind letter from your Mother that you shared with me. Please know that I know just how you feel, as both my parents have passed. My Dad passed after a lengthy illness and my Mother passed suddenly in January 2011, at age 90. Still hard but then my mind goes back to the heart felt memories she had on my life. I want you to know that you have now joined the group of children that have lost their parents.

please know that you are in our prayers for comfort, peace and healing. May God walk with you and bring you peace, and joy in your memories of an exceptional Dad.

Larry and Betty were neighbors and friends of my parents. I always enjoyed the times seeing them socializing together. The last time I saw Larry and Betty was at my Mom's surprise 80th birthday party. She had so many good things to day about the Burkes. You boys may remember that I use to baby sit you before the girls were born. I have met up with your Dad several times in the last few years. He was such a grand person and all around nice guy. I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Tim and Family, My heart goes out to each and every one of you at the loss of your dear Father. I just let Cathy know too, so I'm sure you will be hearing from her soon. May God surround each of you with the love and support you especially need at this time, and in the hard months ahead. There were times in the past when your Mom was alive, that I would send your parents a Christmas card, but had not done that for several years.... until this past Christmas, I sent your Dad a card and little note. He was so kind... he sent me one of his 'hand-made' Christmas cards - I even called Cathy to tell her. I will treasure it for many years. God Bless. Love, Anne Olry Sherbondy (Cathy's sister)

Although we only met (Grandpa) Larry on a number of occasions, it was clear what a wonderful, warm and lively person he was, as well as how special he was to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who loved Larry, especially Dennis and his family.

Attorney Robin Stith

June 26, 2011

Larry and my Dad (the late Harold Stith) and Mom (Hana Stith) were the best of friends for more years than I can remember. In fact, growing up I heard Larry's name so much that I thought he was a family member. It was mutual respect, love, gratitude and understanding between all of them that kept their relationship strong and intact for decades. They were always there for each other regardless of issues, the times and racial boundaries. Attorney Burke had a passion for what is fair and what is right and he was not afraid to stand up for those who did not have a voice and could not stand up for themselves. When my parents wanted me to go to law school, Larry's name was one that they brought up as an example of a phenomenal attorney that I should follow. After I graduated from law school and when I came home, I had the honor of seeing Larry on several occasions. He was always kind and always had a little "older lawyer" advice for me. Larry Burke, like my parents, was a pioneer for justice in Fort Wayne. He did what was necessary to make Fort Wayne a better place. He reached out to help anyone that he could, without being asked. I truly hope that Fort Wayne will reach back out to him and to the family and honor him by naming something in the City after him. Larry Burke was a man who left a huge legacy. Family, I know that it is hard to lose him but God truly blessed you by giving you this wonderful man as a relative. After the tears, rejoice in the divine gift that Larry was. My Dad, Harold Stith, died 2 years ago and I was devastated as I am sure that you are now. Larry came to my Dad's funeral and told me what a great man my father was. It has taken 2 years for me and it will take time for you, but with time, you will discover that your father is not really gone...but that as a result of his tremendous presence in your lives, he lives on and is still here in each and every one of you. I am praying for all of you.

I knew Mr. Burke from working at the Courthouse for many years. He was a very intelligent and kind man. I knew his son Dennis at Northrop High School. I was very sorry to hear of his unfortunate death. I am keeping the family in my thoughts and prayers.

We first met Larry at Jamie's graduation from U of M, along with his wife, Betty. We thought they were both wonderful and we were so happy when the Burkes and the Eckholds became a family with Pat and Jamie's marriage.
We always enjoyed our time with Larry and he will be greatly missed.

Larry was a warm, thoughtful and engaging uncle with a keen sense of humor and broad intellect who truly made a positive contribution to our family and to society. While we will miss him dearly, we can take some comfort knowing that he joins Betty, Jack and Kevin in the hereafter.

May he rest in eternal peace.
