Larry Casserly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 27, 2025.
Lawrence H. Casserly III, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, musician, and friend, passed away on November 16, 2024, just days after celebrating his 69th birthday. Born on November 13, 1955, in Marysville, California, Larry, as he was affectionately known, spent his last days in Nevada City, surrounded by the love of his wife and community.

He cherished his relationship with his dear wife, Patricia Johnston-Casserly, and found immense love for his son, Ryan Casserly.

Music was the rhythm of Larry's soul. As a talented bassist, he played in various bands in the Nevada City area and the early days of the SF Bay Area, bringing joy and harmony to all those who heard him. His passion for music extended beyond performing, as he volunteered as a DJ on a local radio station, KVMR, sharing his eclectic taste and love for music with the community.

Larry's other great love was fishing. He often found peace by the water, casting his line and enjoying the simple beauty of nature. Larry connected deeply with his surroundings and those he held dear during these moments.

Through music, radio, or his renewed faith, he touched many lives with his sense of humor and warmth.

Larry is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia, and his cherished son, Ryan. His sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him, and his family and friends will deeply miss him.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Larry's life will be held on July 15th, 2025, at 10:30 am at St. Patrick's Church, 235 Chapel St, Grass Valley, CA 95945. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate the extraordinary life of a man who touched so many.

We remember a life filled with love, music, and laughter as we bid farewell. His passing was unexpected and sudden, and we miss him greatly. But in our hearts, Larry's bass will forever play on.

Larry and I began our decades long friendship and musical relationship in the early 70's. He was talented, inventive, and solid. As a drummer I appreciated his ability to play "in the pocket".
Two bands, Chaser and The Planets, were the result of a collaboration of young musicians ahead of their time. Larry was an integral part of those heady times. We grew together musically, playing casuals and dives like Eddie's in Marysville, CA.
We reunited a few years ago and I got to see him play a Janis Joplin review.
I always hoped for a Planets reunion but I don't think it could work without Larry.
I'll miss him.

Larry has been my true best friend since my sophomore year in high school. Playing music together throughout our lives was great but the camping trips and adventures we had together through the years are what I really miss. I can honestly say that he and I didn't judge each other, we were there for each other and, believe me, we disagreed on a lot, especially politics. But it never got in the way. We had disagreements but we knew we could always count on each other. We will hang on the other side my brother, let me hear that bass coming down from the heavens!
