Larry Coderre Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 11 to Aug. 12, 2009.
CODERRE, George Lawrence (Larry) Just days before his 80th birthday, Larry passed away peacefully on Saturday August 8, 2009, with family by his side. He joins Lucille, his beloved wife of more than 52 years, who predeceased him in 2007. Born in Almonte on August 17, 1929 to Michael Coderre and Eliza Fairfield, Larry moved to Sudbury in his twenties, where he began a 37-year career with Inco. He married Lucille Ranger of Ottawa in 1954 and together they lovingly raised six children. Ordained as a Deacon in 1984, Larry served two parishes near Sudbury before he retired from Inco and moved with Lucille to Ottawa. In June of this year, "Deacon Larry" was delighted when the parishioners he served at St. Bernard church in Blossom Park held a special celebration in honour of the 25th anniversary of his ordination. He was also very proud last fall when he received the honours of the 4th degree of the Knights of Columbus. Passionate about researching his and Lucille's family histories, Larry met many other Coderre and Ranger genealogy buffs through this hobby. He was a loving father to Denise Van Herk (Michael) of Ottawa, Lorraine Baldisera (Mark) of Sudbury, Michelle Munroe (David) of Elliot Lake, Gerry Coderre (Diane) of St. Catharines, Nicole Hoy (Brent) of Wellington, New Zealand, and Rochelle Hatton (Brent) of Lively. He was Grandpa Larry, the much loved "hugging monster" to his 12 grandchildren, Elyse and Michelle Van Herk, Matthew and Michael Baldisera, Katie (Doug Lariviere), Victoria and Alexander Munroe, Wesley and Melissa Coderre; and Eric, Curtis and Carolyn Hatton. He was the proud great-grandfather of Douglas Munroe Lariviere. Larry is predeceased by his sisters Margaret Piderman and Sister Mary Coderre RHSJ, and by his brothers John, Wilfrid and Frank, as well as his in-laws Dr. Jean-Pierre Piderman, Blanche Coderre, Wilfrid Ranger, Denis Ranger, and Rita Ranger. He will be missed by his in-laws Anita Coderre, Edmond Ranger (Rose), Pauline Charron (Tony), Claude Ranger and Richard Ranger (Pierrette Morissette). Friends and family may call at McEvoy Shields Funeral Home 1411 Hunt Club Rd, (at Albion Rd) on Wednesday August 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday August 13 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Church 1720 St. Bernard Street. Larry felt blessed to receive the very best of care, kindness and support throughout his illness from family and friends and from the professionals and volunteers at the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, 5 East at the General Hospital, The Hospice at May Court and the local CCAC. Heartfelt thanks to all who helped him during this journey. For those who wish, the family would appreciate donations in Larry's memory to the Hospice at May Court 114 Cameron Avenue, Ottawa K1S 0X1, the St. Bernard Parish building fund (613-738-1943) or other charity of your choice. Nicki and Family,

I was saddened to hear of your Dad's passing, I am sure you will all miss him greatly. I did not know your Dad well, but I do remember him making all of us feel welcome whenever we were at your house; even on Christmas Eve before we went to Church.

With Love,

You were blessed with two wonderful and loving parents and you are a testiment to that. They will forever be in your heart. To the Coderre Family -

Larry and I corresponded by email for three or four years back in the late ‘90s. It was a great bit of luck that I met your dad and that he had been doing quite of bit of research on the Ranger family. Well, it’s never easy to find words to express our sadness, but I will say that the months and years I spent corresponding with Larry were among the very best times of my life. One very special occasion your mom and Larry had us over for dinner on a Sunday. It was in the summer of course. There was my wife Betty and me, our grandson Reuben, cousin Jean-Pierre Ranger and his wife, and my mother, Olive. We had the best time you can possibly imagine. Your mother cooked a delicious chicken dinner with all the trimmings and we talked and laughed into the night. We were always planning to come up to Ottawa again some time but somehow never did. And now they’re both gone. It’s very sad indeed.

Larry will be missed. Greatly.

The Coderre Family
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families. I never met Larry, but, with his inspiration and generousity to helping others, we became very good friends through genealogy. I know he will be greatly missed by all his family and friends.
From the words of Billy Graham:
"The Scripture says there is a time to be born and a time to die. And when my time to die comes, an angel will be there to comfort me. He will give me peace and joy even at that most critical hour and usher me into the presence of God, and I will dwell with the Lord forever. Thank God for the ministry of his blessed angels."

My sincere condolences to all the family. I knew both your father and mother from the condo building. They were truly wonderful, caring people. It makes me feel at peace to know that Larry is with his beloved Lucille now.
