Larry Gumber Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2014.
Larry Michael "Mickey" Gumber, of San Antonio, formerly of Whitehouse, passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon Nov. 6, 2014, surrounded by his family. Mickey fought a good fight against lung cancer.

Mickey was born Aug. 14, 1945, in Haynesville, Louisiana. He graduated from Whitehouse High school in 1963. He attended Stephen F. Austin University and got his bachelor's degree in journalism. After college, he worked for the Tyler Morning Telegraph as the sports editor from 1975 to 1978. Besides all of his talents, he also worked as a real estate broker and as a machinery appraiser for several auction companies. Mickey was an avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman. He spent much of his post-retirement time at Bulverde Senior Center, playing bingo and canasta with his friends. Mickey never met a stranger; he will be remembered for his strong personality and great sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Polly Gumber; and sister, Gail Robbins. He is survived by his son, Michael Joseph Gumber (Christina); a stepdaughter, Merijean Hamar (Chris); a sister, Mary Murphy (Ross); a brother, Tony Gumber (Tina); five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four nieces; and four nephews.

Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jackson's Burks Walker Tippit Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2014, at 10 a.m. at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Whitehouse, and burial will follow in Bascom Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society or to your local hospice.

Mickey was something else. I'd never met anyone like him before. I didn't know he was a journalist. What a guy!

Mickey, I'm so glad I knew you. Rest in peace, dear friend. My thoughts and condolences go to Mickey's son Michael, and all his family.
