After graduating from high school in Hudson, Larry pursued higher education at Colorado State University, Fort Collins, where he earned a Master's Degree in Vocational Education. In addition to his educational career, Larry was deeply involved in farming and ranching, specializing in breeding, raising, and training various breeds of driving and riding horses, mules and donkeys. His adventurous spirit was evident in his hobbies, which included jumping out of airplanes, bull riding, buffalo riding, chariot racing, and gymkhanas.

Larry's military service was equally notable. He joined the US Army in 1954, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, until receiving an honorable discharge in 1956.
