Larry RYDER Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald on Aug. 30, 2014.
RYDER, Larry (Lawrence Jeffrey)
December 9, 1942 - August 29, 2014
After a very brief and valiant fight against pancreatic cancer passed away in the early morning holding his wife Carol's hand in the same manner as he lived his life, full of dignity and love and concern for the well being of his family and friends. He was a straightforward, no nonsense man never focusing on himself and while he often seemed gruff, below the surface he had a very large heart as all who knew him knew. He cared deeply for all. He leaves behind knowing they are all well and in safe hands, his loving wife Carol, his beloved daughter Isabelle (Bryce Conrad) and his cherished granddaughters Hayley, Madison and Avery, his brothers Brian and his nephews Justin (Min) (great-nieces Danica and Sydney) and Jon (Kate) (great-niece Kennedy), Stephen (Debbie) (niece and nephew Michael and Carly), his special sister Sabine Ryder, brother-in-law Steve Taylor (Kilby) and his nieces Elyse, Morgan, Tara (Neil) Hargreaves (great-nephews Michael and Alex), his sister-in-law Kathy Taylor (Dwight), his best friend and Uncle Hy (Jennie) Belzberg and Auntie Lil Faider and many old and cherished friends. Larry was committed to his family and family business which was in his mind the ongoing legacy of the Ryder family together with his deep commitment to community, Calgary and Alberta. Organizations that benefited from his involvement as a board member were District 7 (Carewest Seniors), the Alberta Children's Hospital, Calgary Hotel Association, Alberta Hotel Association, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Downtown Association, Calgary Centennial Rotary Club (Rotarian of the Year 1999), Downtown Rotary Club of Calgary, Vice Chair of the Calgary Convention Centre, Chair of the Calgary Parking Authority, Calgary Elbow Progressive Conservative Association, and he was a proud Senior Associate of the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions Committee. In 2002, he received a Leader's Service Award from Premier Ralph Klein and in 2005 was conferred with an Alberta Centennial medal for his service to Alberta. The family would like to thank Unit 93 at the Rockyview Hospital and the triage unit at Emergency at the South Calgary Hospital and Unit 66 for their excellent care while in their hands. Funeral Services will take place at 11:00 a.m. at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, Glenmore Trail SW Calgary with interment to follow at Eriton Street Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Chevra kadisha of Calgary 403-244-4717.

To The Ryder Family I am dearly sorry I just found out about Larry's passing from a phone call I received from Hamilton. When I worked for Tourism Calgary and a born and raised Calgarian we had many conversations about the Trade Winds and history of Calgary. He was always very supported of me which I dearly appreciated. My condolences to the family. My thoughts are with all of you. He will always be dearly remembered

Dear Ryder family, we go back a long way as our mothers (of blessed memory) were close friends. So Larry, Bryan and Steve were part of our lives. I saw Larry recently when we were in Calgary at the Farmers Market and we had the best visit. We reminisced about our parents, siblings and got caught up on our kids. I am so grateful for that time. Carol we only met for a sec but I know from Larry's words that he was a happy man with you. We wish all the family the strength needed to adjust to this huge loss. May his memory be for a blessing.

September 30, 2014

My sincerest condolences to his family.
I worked for Mr. Ryder at the Trade Winds. He was the best boss I have ever worked for, a very honest and fun loving person.
Rest in peace Larry.

Bernie Keller, Calgary Alberta.

My Condolances to the Ryder Family! I worked for Mr. Ryder at the Tradewinds in 1970. His gruffness scared me then but I learned of his kindnesses at a time when life didn't feel very kind. I will always be grateful to him for that. Patricia O'Hanley

Dear carol and family, I worked at the Trade Winds as a waitress in the coffee shop. Larry was so very good to me. I had been away from the city and when I came back after a decade Larry hired me as soon as he found out I was in the city looking for work. Larry started out working at the hotel in all areas. We had him busing tables back in the 60s Larry was a friend as well as a manager.
