Rev. Larry D. Thompson, 81, passed away on January 11, 2017 at Moses Cone Hospital surrounded by loved ones.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Immanuel Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Russ Reaves officiating. Interment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. Family visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Larry Thompson was born on April 27th, 1935 in Lashmeet, WV to Gilmer and Gertrude Thompson. He grew up with four siblings, Blaine; Norma; Leon; and Ramona in the Princeton, WV area and attended Concord College before enlisting in the US Army.

Larry would later move to Rocky Mount, VA where met his bride, Allie Blankenship, and was married on November 4, 1960. After 56 years of marriage, Allie referred to Larry as "the sweetest man on earth besides Jesus." During the next several years, Larry and Allie had three children, Gary, Barry and Linda. Larry felt the call to the ministry and left his career in textiles to follow God's calling.

Larry was such a wonderful, faithful servant. He was ordained into the ministry at Holston Creek Baptist Church in Inman, SC and went on to pastor at Wood Baptist Church in Wood, NC; First Baptist Church of Campobello, SC; Central Baptist in Oak Ridge, NC; Conrad Memorial Baptist in High Point, NC; Sumner Baptist Church in Greensboro; Immanuel Baptist Church in Greensboro and Bethany Baptist in Julian, NC.

He was never known to dislike people. He loved everyone and tried to see people the way the Lord did. Larry and Allie spent their early years in ministry very involved with international students from all over the world. Later they were able to travel to China and Taiwan and immediately fell in love with the people there. He didn't care what you looked like or where you came from, he considered you as family.

Larry spent 40+ years serving in the ministry before answering his ultimate call as he entered the Kingdom of Heaven on January 11, 2017. He spent his life serving the Lord and giving to others more than he had. "The Lord said, 'well done thou good and faithful servant'..." Matthew 25:23.

Allie, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family now. Larry was a very special individual. He meant so much to my family, especially my dad. I thank God for Larry's gift of inspiration, and his truly good in every way life. They, the Jacksons - Herman and Ruth, Paul and Shelby, can tell him themselves what a gift he was.
