Laura Bullitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2025.
Laura L. T. Bullitt died in the early hours of January 6, 2025. While she had been largely housebound for several years, she retained her faculties to the very end. Fortunately, she passed very quickly. Laura Wayne Lee and her identical twin, Nancy, were born on February 18, 1927, in Washington DC to P. Blair and Elizabeth Wayne Lee. Shortly thereafter. the family moved to Chestnut Hill, PA. The twins attended Chatham Hall in Virginia and Smith College in Massachusetts.

During a family vacation in Northeast Harbor, Maine, she met her future husband, Paul Thompson. They were married on June 18, 1948, shortly after Paul graduated from Princeton. They welcomed their first child in 1949, and 2 other children followed. They raised their children in the Wayne, PA area. Raising a family consumed much of Laura's attention for the next twenty years. She was an avid gardener, an excellent tennis player, and had a great fascination and love of nature, especially birds. During the prolonged sickness of her youngest son, Blair, she devoted a great amount of time to helping him.

She did volunteer work for the United Way, St David's Church, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. She loved music and always looked forward to the Friday afternoon concert series. Laura became fascinated with historical decorative painting. She joined the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD) and painted exquisite painted tinware trays, furniture, clock dials and fans. This is an elaborate painstaking skill requiring patience and a very steady hand. It became a passion for the rest of her life, and she received many awards for her art. Laura served on the HSEAD Exhibition Committee and later became a Judge for many years. She was an active member in the local William Penn Chapter.

After Paul Thompson's death in 1989, she married Orville Bullitt, Jr. They had a happy but brief marriage as he passed away seven years later. Laura Bullitt is survived by her twin sister, Nancy Reath, her son, Paul Thompson III, her daughter, Laura Thompson, her four grandchildren, Samantha and Charlotte Thompson and Joan and Robbie Thompson, and her great grandson, James Thompson. Her youngest son, Blair, predeceased her in 1994.

A memorial service is planned for April 7, 2025, at St. David's Church in Wayne, PA at 3 o'clock. The family asks that no flowers be sent. Instead, please make donations to either St. David's Church or the Philadelphia Orchestra.
