Laura Gainey Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 13, 2006.
On Friday December 8, 2006, Laura Gainey, 25, daughter of Montreal Canadiens general manager Bob Gainey, was swept by a wave from the tall sailing ship Picton Castle in rough seas about 750 kilometres southeast of Cape Cod, Mass.

Laura was an advanced apprentice on the ship, having trained on it for months.

She sailed from Cape Town, South Africa to Lunenburg, N.S. in May, then trained on it while in the Great Lakes this summer. The current trip departed Lunenburg Dec. 5, headed for St. George's, Grenada.

Laura, who battled drug addiction as a teenager after her mother died of a brain tumor when Laura was barely 10, had expressed an interest in sailing as a profession.

To the Gainey family -

Even to this day, you remain in my heart for your strength, your goodness, and your inspiration as a united family to all of us who know the heartache of the loss of a loved one.

I do not know why this life is such a severe test, too many times, for everyone of us who, in happier times, feels grateful for this wonderful gift of life we are blessed to have been given.

May you find comfort and joy in knowing that you are a beacon of light that brings together countless people who will never physically nor socially meet, but who bask in the common bond of spiritual togetherness with the Gainey family.

I lost my son Mathieu this week to cancer. He was 42 years old. He went to Roslyn School with Laura and they were friends during elementary school. Today, I understand the pain of a parent to lose a child. You are in my thoughts.

Dear Bob,
The words that we pray are of comfort to you are that even though you do not personally know every person sending you and your family heartfelt condolences, we all know you, and feel compelled to let you know that we want to help in any way, but we can not. The only way we can help is to keep Laura, you, and your family in our prayers.
May God bless you all and hold you close to him in this time of sadness.

Dear Bob,

words cannot express the sadness i feel for you and your family at this troubled time...i am told over and over during times like these that things happen for reasons and as much as it's hard to imagine what reason could make such a sad loss make any sense, i think we must believe that there is some kind of higher power and that we all have our place and time to serve that higher power and to make the world around us a better place and to treat people, ALL people, around us with love and respect...i try to...i know you always have...i'm conviced laura did too...the few times we have met in montreal as a kid, in LA as a kid dressed in adult's clothes, you always were the best...take this love from so many who know you and know what you stand for and take it to heart...the spirit of good people lives on everyday in the hearts and deeds of the ones they loved.

with deepest sympathies to you and your family.

I am but one of the millions of anonymous fans who have watched and learned and grew to love the Gainey family in the media, through the good times and hard times. A day will never go by where a Gainey family member will ever be alone and where a prayer will go unsaid. So on a day that will come where the hurt feels unbearable and the loss too heavy to handle, please turn to the stranger next you for comfort and strength, that stranger will know where that pain comes from and be able to console, for that stranger might be me with open arms. We the fans, of the Gainey Family, we love you and we are hear for you anytime.

December 15, 2006

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dear Mr. Gainey:

I grew up as a kid in Montreal. I have watched you raise cups as a Captain and I have seen you play through pain. I have always seen you conduct yourself with the upmost degree of humility, courage and good sportsmanship in all your endeavors. For everything that is wrong with professional sports today, to me, you represent those things that are right!

As a parent myself now, I cannot even begin to imagine the suffering that you and your family are feeling right now in the loss of your daughter, Laura. I pray that she has met her rest with her mother, Cathy, in heaven.

I also pray that you will have the strength to recover from this tragedy and continue to be a great leader both to your children and this country. These attributes that you possess are seemingly in short supply.

It is oft said that time heals all things. I hope that you will take all the time that you need.

Dear Mr Gainey,

I have many fond memories as a youngster watching you weave your two-way magic on a Saturday night as part of the great Canadiens of the 1970's. A particulary vivid memory was watching you and your teammates play (and defeat) the Leafs at the Gardens. My mom had won tickets near the zamboni entrance at ice level and I can still recall believing that my words of congratulations were heard and appreciated as the team left the ice. Wow what a night that was!

And so it was with sadness that I learned of the tragic loss of your daughter Laura. Know that you have countless fans across Canada that are thinking of you and your family at this difficult time.

Our daughter Stephanie is a young teenager, she is a very gifted and enjoys writing. She has been very touched and moved by Laurie's tragedy and very late last night, once again broke down into tears and just started writing. The same thing happened when she wrote that profound letter to Anastasia De Sousa, which was published in the Gazette on September 19, 2006. The Guidance Counsellor at her school thinks it is so beautiful and touching she suggested it deserves to be read. Mr.Andrew Phillips from the Gazette also suggested to me earlier I should send you Stephanie's heartfelt poem written for your beautiful princess Laurie Gainey.
Once again, our deepest condolences go out to the Gainey Family for your great loss.

TRIBUTE TO LAURIE GAINEY

My Guardian Angel

Bright, docile, innocent is what you are.
Peace and tranquility perfectly defines an angel in the sky.
Such a youthful spirit, having lost you has hurt me deeply,
Full of pain that has marked my soul.

I can feel your presence right beside me and all around,
each time I hear the lovely oceans sound.
Sensing your spirit, I promise to not let go,
so you can be granted the opportunity to experience life once more.

Don’t you worry, don’t you cry,
the water will be by your side to sing you a harmonized lullaby.
Lost at sea, wanting to be found,
wipe away your tears for we will rescue you
from the oceans empowering tideway.

Love always,

Dearest Mr. Gainey and family,
I have prayed so hard for Laura and your family. I believe that regardless of the outcome His Hand is still upon you and she is sheltered in His Arms. God Bless You all.
