She moved to Traverse City in 1996 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. In Traverse City, she was a volunteer with the Foster Grandparents for many years. This was where she found her way back to teaching, as a volunteer in various elementary schools where she especially enjoyed helping children learn to read. She continued her volunteer work until the age of 87.
Laura had a love of animals and had many pets throughout her life. She especially loved her cats and provided a home for many.
During her time in Manistee, Laura belonged to Guardian Angels Parish and was a member of St Francis Parish once she moved to Traverse City.
